MARY LOU SMITH

Wednesday, January 2, 2008

Mary Lou Smith, age 82, a resident of Fort Scott, Kansas, went home to be with the Lord early Monday, December 31, 2007, at the St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Missouri, as a result of a head injury from falling on the ice. She was born December 26, 1925, in Fort Scott, the daughter of William Jones and Martha Norris Jones. She married Elmer Smith on April 15, 1943, in Fort Scott. They had been happily married for 60 years when he preceded her in death on June 2, 2003. She worked for the Western Insurance Company from 1962 until 1984. Mary Lou received Jesus Christ as her Savior in 1963 and has faithfully served Him as a member of Grace Baptist Tabernacle ever since. Elmer and Mary Lou enjoyed family gatherings and traveling together. After Elmer's death, Mary Lou continued to be an active lady who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, attending her exercise class, and participating in a Bible study group. She was always willing to share a smile or lend a hand, and will be greatly missed by those privileged to count her as family or friend.

In addition to her parents and husband Elmer, Mary Lou was preceded in death by her daughter, Carolyn Smith; grandson, Brad Smith; and two brothers, Boyd and Howard Jones. She is survived by her son, Darrell Smith and wife Sandy, Fort Scott; three grandchildren, Heather Forsbeck, Sarah Causey, and Julie Davis; eleven great-grandchildren; her niece, Marilyn Fluty; and nephew, Larry Jones.

Funeral services for Mary Lou Smith will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, January 4, 2008, at the Grace Baptist Tabernacle, with Rev. Paul Rooks and Rev. A.F. Collins officiating. Burial will follow in the U.S. National Cemetery. The family will receive friends for visitation from 12:30 p.m. until service time on Friday at the church. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Grace Baptist Tabernacle and may left with Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, Fort Scott, KS, 66701. Words of sympathy may be e-mailed to the family at condolences@cheneywitt.com.
