Daniel Gerard Payne, age 51, resident of Fort Scott, died Nov. 28, 2007 as the result of a house fire.

He was born Jan. 7, 1956 in Fort Scott, the son of Elmer Mike Payne and Hilda Roberts Payne. Dan and attended school in Fulton and later graduated from Jayhawk Linn High School in 1974. He married Vonda McGehee in 1990. They later divorced. Dan lived in Bourbon County his entire life. He was known for his humor by his many friends.

Survivors include a son, Nicholas Payne; three brothers, Charley Payne, Fort Scott, Joe Payne, Prescott, Kansas, and Jim Payne, Van Vleck, Texas; three sisters, Mary Leisure, Fall River, Kansas, Paula Cannon, Louisburg, Kansas, and Teresa Holder, Stockton, Mo.; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1971 and his father in 2004.

There was cremation. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, 2007, at the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel. At the request of the family, please omit flowers. Services are under the direction of the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel, 201 S. Main St., Fort Scott.
