Dragons seize momentum in dual win

PITTSBURG -- Fort Scott High School's wrestling team was unable to maintain some early momentum and lost a Southeast Kansas League dual to rival Pittsburg here Tuesday night, 55-21.

Fort Scott held a 21-9 lead after six matches although it had won two of them by forfeit. But Pittsburg won each of the last eight matches, seven of them by pin.

This was the first action for the Tigers, 0-1 in the SEK and 3-3 overall, since Dec. 8 at Eudora as they pulled out of last weekend's Ottawa Tournament amid concerns about traveling in inclement weather. For the Purple Dragons, it was their first dual of the season after taking part in a couple of tournaments.

Pittsburg won the opening match at 103 pounds by forfeit. Then Dragon Mario Carado won the 112-pound bout over Justin Sharp by a score of 10-5.

But Denzell Davis and Levi Tweedy collected forfeit wins at 119 and 125 and first-year grappler Josh Nunez continued to impress by defeating Kyle Whetzell, 5-0, at 130 pounds. Nunez's record improved to 8-4 as a result of the win.

Michael Durossette's pin of Mike Eller at 130 pounds gave the Tigers their 21-9 advantage in team scoring. But the Dragons won the next two matches by pin, then took the bout at 152 pounds by decision. After that came five straight Dragon pins to end the dual.

The Tigers' next action is January 5 at Bonner Springs for the Richard Burns Invitational.

JUNIOR VARSITY -- Pittsburg won all five JV matches by pin. Nick Whetzell pinned Brady Toole at 160 and Matt Easthan pinned Aaron Judy at 171. In other matches (weight class not indicated), Pittsburg's Dakota Burton pined Cody Phillips, Seth Scott pinned Kenneth Singmaster and Beau Bennett pinned Singmaster.

The junior varsity team is scheduled to be idle until January 12 when it will go to the Labette County Tournament.
