Blackout means cold showers, fireplace cuisine

Guests in the Maxine James home in Arcadia were Terry, Debbie and Sarah Vanderpool, Frontenac; Jerry and Marilyn James, rural Arcadia; Juyle James, Pittsburg; Josh Smith, St. Paul; Aaron, Melissa, McKenzie and Alex Coefter, rural Girard; Pat and Craig McMillin, Pitsburg.

The day was spent eating and much visiting in a relaxed casual atmosphere for a typical Thanksgiving Day.

Forrest and Ernestine Berkey won four dinners at Gebhardt's and attended on Monday night Dec. 3. Their guests were A. O. and Donna Brown, Mulberry; Lois and Jack Lemon, Angela Redd, Pittsburg; Paul and Diane Starne, Arcadia. The group listened and watched a film on fire prevention.

The Berkeys also won the $30 gift certificate to be used at a later date at Gebhart's

Debbie Jeck came from Pittsburg and her sister, Vickie Ball, from Joplin were in Arcadia one day last week visiting folks in their old neighborhood.

M. V. Shead had a visit with John Scott in Fort Scott on Tuesday. He and Pat Scott recently moved into their newly built home on Fort Scott Lake. Daughter Shelly Scott is a head nurse in the former Family Physicians Clinic on Horton Street where out-of-town doctors now meet patients. The Scotts are remembered in Arcadia for the many years they owned and operated what was known as Scott's Grocery Store on Nelson Street across west of the former Post Office building.

Naomi Snow from the Coalvale area was in Arcadia and Fort Scott on business Thursday.

During the recent blackout in places south of Pittsburg, Ralph and Cindy Shead were among the fortunate families in Carl Junction who had both lights and water. They shared lunches with folks who had been eating wieners roasted in a fireplace and taking cold showers in their unheated homes.

While the Sheads were on a recent trip to Fairfield Bay, Ark., their guests were Luis and Katie Almonacid from Chile. Luis was a member of the Sheads' youth group in the Chilean Church a few years ago. Katie, a student at Ozark Christian College in Joplin, went as an intern to Chile and met Luis. They are now married and are in the United States on furlough, visiting her family in Oswego. This winter is the first time Luis had seen falling snow.

Friday evening this week, Lou and Betty Dehn went calling on five new residents who recently moved to Arcadia. The Dehns took home baked cookies and candy and invited the families to the Arcadia Christian Church program on Saturday night and to Church on Sunday.

On Monday, Dec. 10, Autumn Leaves Senior Citizens met for their turkey dinner, Christmas party, gift exchange and played Bingo. It was a cold but beautiful day reminding all that Christmas was just around the corner. Seven were present. Two carry-out dinners went to Bob Cavin and Mary V. Shead. Patty Peterson was a first time guests.

The group enjoyed turkey, dressing, The home made noodles were by Helen Sisney, mashed potatoes, gravy and homemade fudge. Dessert was a birthday cake by Lilly Coonrod for Mary V. Shead who celebrated the next day.

Mary Lee and Jack Payne presented the Club with a new set of dishes. Cards were signed for Bob Adams,, Mel Payne family and Mary V. Shead. A donation was given by Jim and Donna Kunzler for the use of the Cottage.

President Lilly Coonrod called the meeting to order. Jack Payne gave the treasurer's report. Mary Lee told the legend of the Candy Cane and quoted, Christmas Time is Friendship time. Carole Garrison read an inspirational writing of Helen Keller and the story of "Little Annie." Jerry Coonrod and Jack Payne delivered the meals. The next meeting on Monday Jan. l4, 2008 all seniors are welcome to attend and enjoy food and fellowship.
