Lucien Antoine

Fort Scott Community College sophomores Lucien Antoine and Greg Cross were recently honored with spots on the National Junior College Athletic Association All-American football team.

Antoine, a defensive back from Coral Springs, Fla., was named to the second team. He was fifth in the Jayhawk Conference in tackles, averaging 10.2 per game. Antoine made a total of 112 tackles, three of which were for a loss. This was also good for 11th on the NJCAA's national list. He also intercepted three passes and recovered two fumbles.

Antoine is one of the few links between the 24-game losing streak and this year's Jayhawk Conference and Region VI runner-up team. He came to FSCC in 2005 but was redshirted that season, somehow considered not good enough to play on a team that finished 0-9. Now he's receiving attention from NCAA Division I schools in major conferences such as the Big 12.

Greg Cross

Cross, the Greyhounds' quarterback for nearly every snap the past two seasons and a native of Brunswick, Ga., was named to the honorable mention team. He led the conference in passing with 2,127 yards and total offense with 2,529 yards, the only conference player to reach 2,000 yards in either category. He was also responsible for 23 touchdowns -- 17 passing, six rushing.

Cross, who was named the Jayhawk Conference's Offensive Player of the Year, finished 12th in the nation in passing on the basis of his per-game average of 193.0 yards. But only seven other quarterbacks in the NJCAA actually threw for more yards. More impressively, Cross was third in the NJCAA in total offense (233.0 ypg), trailing only Garrett Barnes of Harper, Ill. (307.9) and Lorenzo Brown of North Iowa Area (264.0).

Other Jayhawk Conference players honored by the NJCAA include:

* -- Butler running back Beau Johnson, linebacker Wade Weibert and defensive lineman Markus White, the Jayhawk Conference's Defensive Player of the Year, were named to the first team as was Garden City's do-everything receiver, kicker and punter, Cameron Kenney.

* -- Independence receiver Andre Simmons, Garden City offensive lineman Zach Roth and Butler center Erick Dahl received second team honors.

* -- Garden City linebacker J.R. Bryant, Butler kicker Grady Fowler, defensive back Maurice Gray and defensive lineman Swanson Miller and Coffeyville running back Nate Guillory, defensive back Melvin Williams and defensive lineman Troy Epps were all placed on the honorable mention list.
