The National Weather Service in Springfield, Mo., has issued a winter weather advisory for Bourbon County that is expected to impact the area Friday evening and continue through Saturday.

Early Friday, the NWS reported a winter storm system that is moving into the area from the central and southern Rockies into the plains region Friday. The storm is expected to then move into the lower and mid-Mississippi Valley Saturday evening.

The winter storm advisory includes Fort Scott and 15 other cities and towns within an 11-county region in Southeast Kansas and Southwest Missouri. A winter storm watch means there is potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel, the NWS report said.

The watch area could be adjusted Friday as the storm system develops. Two main periods of snow are possible Friday and Saturday, the report said.

Areas of snow are expected to spread over the region Friday evening, and periods of light to moderate snow will continue into Saturday. Overall snow amounts are predicted to range from 5 to 7 inches in the watch area with lesser amounts to the south of the area expected at this time, the report said.
