Saturday, December 15, 2007

Temperatures will drop into the lower teens Saturday and Sunday night, the city of Fort Water Department reminds homeowners to follow tips that will prevent frozen water pipes.

Temperatures Saturday night will dip to 12 degrees, according to forecasters. On Sunday, temperatures will inch up to 19 degrees.

And forecasters are calling for moderate snow accumulations Friday night into Saturday morning, which will drop temperatures into the teens.

The city recommends homeowners eliminate drafts and repair any broken windows in the basement and crawl spaces. They should insulate pipes that are most susceptible to freezing. Disconnect garden hoses from outside water hydrants. Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow air to circulate and prevent pipes from freezing. Let a drip or stream of water run from the faucets while temperatures are sub-zero. Know where the house's master water valve is located. If a pipe breaks, the homeowner can shut-off the valve.

A common symptom of a frozen water line is that one or more of the water fixtures in a building or residence won't provide water. If some faucets are dry and others work, the homeowners should contact a plumber to assist in thawing the line, according to the city. If all faucets are dry, the customer should contact the water department for further checking.

The city this year hasn't been contacted by an residents about frozen water pipes that have led to breaks, Public Works Director Eric Bailey said. However, there are times when customers call the city for help because of a break and making people aware of steps they can take to safeguard against frozen pipes is a proactive action that can save possibly thousands of dollars in repairs.
