Movie Review: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

Thursday, December 6, 2007

Starring Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Geoffrey Rush, Bill Nighy, Naomie Harris and Stellan Skarsgard.

Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action/adventure violence and some frightening images with a running time of 2 hr. 45 min.

I knew going into this movie that I would love it. After seeing the fate of Captain Jack Sparrow (played by Johnny Depp -- Academy Award and two-time Golden Globe nominated role) at the end of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, I couldn't wait for the next movie to come out.

At World's End picks up right where Dead Man's Chest leaves off, battling the infamous Davy Jones (played by Bill Nighy) and the Brittish military, with the help of Captain Barbossa (played by Geoffrey Rush) brought back from the dead by Tia Dalma (played by Naomie Harris).

I do have to say this one was a little more "trippy" than the others, with surreal scenes of Captain Jack Sparrow seeing and interacting with multiples of himself and crazy rock crabs transporting his ship.

Ah, the magic of movie making.

Magic is what comes to mind. This movie seemed to have more of a magical sense to it than the other two. The amazing cast and deliverance of characterization is what kept me coming back, (and who doesn't like a movie about pirates?) but the special affects in the third movie brought it home. This one pushed the envelope.

The character of Elizabeth Swann (played by Keira Knightley) really evolves in this movie, taking on a more dominant leadership role in discovering her "pirateness" and yet still maintaining the ability to stand up for what is right in the world.

This movie did a great job tying up loose ends to the other two movies; such as Will Turner's (played by Orland Bloom) promise to rescue his father Bootstrap Bill (played by Stellan Skarsgard) and presenting new ones to obviously be answered in future movies. The end of At World's End leaves it wide open for the next installment. I can't wait to watch the development of the fate that befell Will and Elizabeth.

Racked with adult humor, I feel it is still a suitable family movie.
