Melvin O. Payne, 67, of Arcadia, died at 11:11 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007, at Mercy Health Center in Fort Scott.
Mr. Payne was born Dec. 6, 1939, in Pittsburg, the son of Elmer and Opal Cox Payne. Mr. Payne was a retired serviceman for Pepsi Cola in Pittsburg for 15 years.
He was raised in Phoenix, Ariz., and attended Phoenix schools. He owned and operated Payne's Bar and Grill in Arcadia. He moved to Arcadia in 1976.
He married Carole Winkler on Dec. 31, 1959, in Phoenix, Ariz. They later divorced. He later married Lois Elaine Webb on Sept. 24, 1988 in Fort Scott. Lois preceded him in death July 25, 2006. He was a member of the American Legion in Girard.
Survivors include two sons, Melvin O. Payne, Jr., of Fort Scott and Mike Payne of Arcadia, two daughters, Debbie Hencey of Arcadia and Susan Greenwood of Mindenmines, Mo., a step-son, Dearl Owens of Arma, two sisters, Dorothy Ball of Sheriden, Iowa, and Jeri Crain of Arcadia, three brothers, Bill Payne of Idaho, Don Payne of Arcadia, and Ernie Payne of Phoenix, Ariz., nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Mr. Payne has been cremated according to his wishes. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007, at the Open Door Mission Church in Arcadia. Arrangements are under the direction of the Bedene Funeral Home in Arma.
Mr. Payne also worked for Hinkley Beverage in Fort Scott and served on the Arcadia City Council.
