Helen Irene Simonds, age 72, a resident of Fort Scott, died Thursday, November 15, 2007, at the Mercy Health Center in Fort Scott, Kansas. She was born July 17, 1935, in Fort Madison, Iowa, the daughter of John and Ruby Brill. Helen and her sister Betty were raised by their great-uncle and great-aunt John and Lottie Huebner. Helen took Huebner as her name.

As a high school student Helen was a cashier for Fairyland Park. At that time she was a member of Swope Park Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Southeast High School in Kansas City, Missouri.

After graduation, she worked as a switch board operator for several businesses in Kansas City.

She married Paul C. Simonds on September 5, 1959. The couple had three children, Paul Jr., Jeri Lynn and Daniel Parker. Helen and Paul moved around until moving to Kansas City, Missouri in 1963 where she worked 11 years for KU Medical Center. They settled in Fort Scott in 1988. Helen was a member of Community Christian Church. She was noted for her generosity, and love for friends, family and her three dogs. She loved playing games.

Helen is survived by her husband, Paul, of the home; two sons, Paul Simonds, Jr., and Daniel Simonds, and wife, Sara, Fort Scott, a daughter, Jeri Lynn Kropp and husband, Robert, Fort Scott, two grandchildren, Robert Kropp, Jr. and Amanda Marie Kropp. Also surviving is a sister, Charlotte Partin, Bevier, Missouri, a brother-in-law, Conrad Antes, Kansas City, Missouri, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ruby Brill and John and Lottie Huebner, who raised her, and by her sister, Betty.

Following cremation, the Rev. Kevin Moyers will conduct a memorial service at 6 p.m. Thursday, November 29, 2007, at the Community Christian Church. Memorials are suggested to the Community Christian Church Youth Fund in lieu of flowers and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Ft. Scott, Kansas 66701.
