Tuesday, November 13, 2007

Eleven members of Fort Scott High's football team received All-Southeast Kansas League honors as the all-league team was released Monday. Under league policy, all-SEK teams are not released until the last league team is eliminated from the post-season. That happened when Columbus lost to Baldwin in the Class 4A Sectional playoff round.

League champion Pittsburg and Columbus also had 11 players named with the top three league finishers -- Columbus and Fort Scott tied for second -- each seeing five chosen to the First Team.

The SEK doesn't honor players by position, with the exception of punter and kicker.

Fort Scott's First Team players are all seniors: Jeff Johnson, Clint Lawrence, Blake Nelson, Lucas Halsey and Tony Karleskint. Halsey was also named the all-league kicker.

Pittsburg saw seniors Jacob Wilson, C.J. Fondren and Brock Garrett and juniors Tanner Smith and Fred Sellars named. Columbus had seniors Cody Moore, Corbin Stanley, Bill Green and Tyler Fleming and junior Justin Rogers honored.

Chanute saw four players named to the First Team: senior Devon Crabtree and juniors Loren Jones, Craig Gilmore and Kevin Martin. Labette County had three named, all seniors: Luke Hartman, Joey Hambleton and Clayton Palmer.

Coffeyville's Drew Davis and Jake Brown, both seniors, Iola's John Shapel, a junior, and Kyler Thompson, a sophomore, Independence's Ethan Speicher and Grant Webster, both juniors, and Parsons senior Al Glass round out the First Team. Parsons senior Logan Cares was named all-league punter.

Fort Scott's Second Team honorees were also all seniors in Grant Hartman, Alex Bowman and Matt Wheeler. Five players represented Pittsburg: seniors Charlie Northcutt, Kirk Smith, Zach Richardson and Dane Bell and junior Zach White.

Columbus had senior James Webb, junior Justin Pillar and sophomore Lewis Kellogg selected. Seniors Tray Olson and Donnie Rucker and junior Ty Blanchard represent Chanute.

Seniors Jake Cunningham and Shawn Moody were Coffeyville's representatives. Senior Kenny Culver and junior Drew Mueller were chosen from Iola. Seniors Matt Cadle and Brett Cruise represent Independence and Parsons, respectively.

Seniors Andre Davis and Chris Colvin and junior Alex Barner were Fort Scott's picks for the Honorable Mention team. Pittsburg saw senior Jesse Smith named while Columbus had senior Cody Burton and sophomores Matt Crain and Taylor Burns chosen.

Senior Kevin Richard and junior Craig Pervin represent Chanute. Seniors Jase Robinson and Ryan Fryar were chosen from Coffeyville. Junior Josh Gumfrey was Iola's selection. Senior A.J. Reed and sophomore Rhett Flood were named from Independence and seniors Tyler Gilley and Jeremy Kinsch were picked from Parsons.

NOTES -- Wilson of Pittsburg finished as the Southeast Kansas League's leading scorer as no one from Columbus caught up on Friday night. Wilson scored 19 touchdowns to finish with 114 points, becoming the first Purple Dragon to lead the league since 1994. Halsey, with nine touchdowns, 43 extra-point kicks and three field goals, finished second with 106 points. Pillard was third with 15 touchdowns and four two-point conversions for 98 points….
