He was born Sept. 22, 1935 in Arcadia, Ks., the son of Herbert Dewey and Hattie M. Copeland Stephens. He married Shirley Freer Boyles on July 19, 1972 in Girard, Ks. She survives of Fort Scott.
In addition to his wife, Shirley, he is survived by four sons, Mike Stephens of Westphalia, Ks., Matt Stephens of Milton Freewater, Oregon, Gus Boyles of Frontenac, Ks., and Chuck Boyles of Pittsburg, Ks., four daughters, Michelle Walton of Mildred, Ks., MOria Gauthier of Fort Scott, Ks., Gail Byrd of Webb City, Mo., and Leeanna Burke of Blue Springs, Mo., a brother, Gene Stephens of Arcadia, Ks., and 14 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Timothy Ray Stephens, a sister, Saundra Sue Stephens, and a brother, Robert Dewey Stephens.
Funeral services for John A. Stephens will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2007, at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007, at the Konanta-Cheney Funeral Home.
