Indy champs again; Query fifth

Tuesday, October 2, 2007

INDEPENDENCE -- The Southeast Kansas League has been holding a girls' tennis championship for 35 years. Independence has now won 25 league titles after winning the SEK Tournament for the fourth straight season here Monday.

Independence, also the defending Class 4A State champion, won by a fair margin over Labette County. Parsons was third, Coffeyville fourth, Pittsburg fifth, Columbus sixth, Iola seventh, Chanute eighth and Fort Scott ninth.

Jill Query was seeded sixth in the tournament but went 2-2 and finished fifth to provide a highlight for the Tigers. She lost to third-seeded Adrienne Kutz of Parsons in the first round, 8-1. But she beat Shelby Crain of Chanute, 8-1, in the next match.

Query, 9-15 for the season, lost a close match to Labette County's Alahna Broadway, 8-5. But then won a tie-breaker over Janelle Kranker of Pittsburg, 8-7 (7-3) in the fifth-place match.

"Jill had a good tournament," Fort Scott head coach Lynn Barr said. "Against Broadway she started out strong, but her opponent just was too steady down the stretch and came out with the win. In Jill's final match of the day, she came back to get a win against Kranker, who she lost to in their most recent match. She played good solid tennis during this match, especially in the tiebreaker, controlling the breaker from the start."

Brittney Doherty, 5-10, finished seventh in No. 2 singles. She lost in the opening round to Erin Farmer of Pittsburg, 8-0, and in the next match to Amy Shaw of Parsons, 8-1. She finished the day by defeating Preeya Patel of Iola, 8-2, for seventh place.

"Brittney did a nice job for us in this tournament," Barr said. "She was a little disappointed, but for someone who has only played tennis for such a short time, she has nothing to feel bad about. She has shown more improvement than anyone else on the team during this season. Both of her losses came to good players and she came back and dominated her opponent in the seventh-place match from the start."

Both doubles teams went 0-1, losing in tie-breakers in play-in matches between the eighth and ninth seeds. Danielle Miller and Molly Karleskint lost to Chanute's Eunae Abbuehl/Ericka Kepley, 8-7 (7-3), in No. 1's and Taylor Bailey and Erin Caulfield fell to Pittsburg's Sammi Highfield/Chapril Stewart, 8-7 (7-3), in No. 2's.

"We really needed our doubles teams to step up today and get some points for us, but unfortunately it didn't happen," Barr said. "Both teams had great opportunities to get out of the play-in matches and advance, but their errors were just too costly. They were both matches that we were capable of winning, but it just didn't happen for us today. Both of our teams played hard, but just couldn't over come the mistakes and errors."

Unlike previous years, the Tigers will have to regroup quickly as the new post-season format will send them to a five-team Class 4A Regional Tournament at Iola Thursday. Top finishers advance to a Sub-State Tournament Saturday at Parsons.
