Worship, social events, service occupy Hiattville residents

The monthly potluck was held Sept. 8 at the church with a good attendance and as always, a bountiful meal.

Mr. and Mrs. Dean Mitchell attended the Caldwell family reunion at Stockton Lake, Sept 9. The Mitchells were especially honored this year as they will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in October. They were presented a special decorated cake, and one of the cousins sang a special song to them.

Jessica Schwalm spent the weekend with her parents, David, Cindy, Cassie and Zach.

Communion was served Sunday morning at worship. Pastor Smith's sermon was titled "Are We Prepared for Discipleship?" Scripture was read from Jeremiah 18: 1- 11 and Luke 14: 25- 33.

On Sept. 14, the finance committee will meet at 7 p. m.

The monthly board meeting will be held Sept. 16, following morning services at 11 a. m.

Laura Vogelbacher and Rachel Wagner hosted a dinner at the fire station Sept. 9, in honor of their parents', Charles and Paula Brewer, 40th wedding anniversary. Those present to help the honorees celebrate were Donna and Rudy Simpson, Lois and Dale Brillhart, Lavone Page, Don, Laurie, Ashton and Erin Hall of Norwick, Dana, Abby and Chloe Harris, Tim, Katie and Brook Usury of Fort Scott, Laura and Payton Vogelbacker, Kayla and Kole Wagner and Ed and Barb McDaniel.

Don Gauthier recently spent several days in Randall helping his brother with some remodeling.

opened with members repeating the "Purpose." Roll call was answered by six members telling about fall activities. The treasurer's report was given by Mabel Miller.

Beverly Davis was lesson leader. The worship table was covered with a purple cloth, a silver cross centered the table and was surrounded with small white stones and ivy with small vases of flowers from Mrs. Davis' flower gardens. Everyone participated in presenting the lesson which was titled, "The Journey to the Promise Land, Through the Wilderness." Scripture was read by Dora Page and Mabel Miller. Songs used were "Breathe on me Breath of God" and "Peace on Earth." The lesson was closed with a unison prayer.

The "Response" moment was given by Dora Page. Clara Brewer gave a report from the prayer calendar and asked everyone to remember the mission work in Korea in their prayers.

Patty Gauthier presented the slate of officers for 2008 that had been picked by the nominating committee. The following officers elected were president, Beverly Davis; vice president, Patty Gauthier; secretary, Lavone Page and treasurer, Mabel Miller. Mabel Miller will continue to be secretary of program resources, Patty Gauthier will be spiritual growth. Education and interpretation will be Glenda Miller and Dora Page will continue as social action leader. The nominating committee members elected were Mabel Miller, chairperson; Clara Brewer and Lavone Page. The recognition committee is Clara Brewer, chairperson; Glenda Miller and Patty Gauthier.

A letter from Tim and Paula Ubrick, Christian veterinary missionaries, telling they had been allowed to go back to Africa to resume their mission work there was received. The unit will support them with a contribution once a year.

The fall district meeting will be in Osowatomie Sept. 22. The unit decided to keep the pledge the same as it is for 2007.

The unit discussed replacing the kitchen curtains but no action was taken. There were many listed for prayer concerns. The meeting was closed with prayer by the president. Mrs. Davis served refreshments of pineapple cake, cheese and crackers. The next meeting will be Oct. 8. Mabel Miller will be lesson leader.

Ideal Chapter 369 Order of the Eastern Star resumes their bi-monthly meetings Sept. 13 after a two-month vacation. Effie and Dean Mitchell presided in the east as worthy patron and worthy patron.

The degrees of the order were exemplified with Lynda Foster acting candidate. Plans were made for the chapter to participate in the three-way meeting of the district aides official visit at Fort Scott Sept. 18. Members are to take salads to be served at the close of the meeting.

Sept. 27, Ideal Chapter will observe the annual friendship meeting. Officers are to dress formal, invite their own guest and provide a gift for them.

The secretary displayed the certificate of appreciation form the Kansas Masonic Foundation for the chapter's support for the Kansas Masonic All-State High School Marching Band and the Kansas All-Star Shrine Bowl game. This is the fourth year the chapter has sponsored a band student. A thank-you note was received from Jessica Carnes, the student the chapter helped sponsor this year.

Invitations were received from Rob Morris' chapter for their friendship meeting. Oct. 2 and Sunflower's Chapter for their friendship meeting Oct. 9.

A letter from Isabel Adams, worthy grand matron, and Mike Towner, worthy grand patron, was read. In the treasurer's report, it was noted that the chapter made $53.50 selling pie at the Palmer sale. Margaret McDermed gave the Sunshine report. Several members had been ill during the summer months.

During the Good of the Order, the worthy matron gave a brief report about the origin of Labor Day. She also reported on the funeral service the Chapter conducted for the Louise Morrison memorial service. She expressed appreciation for the members' support of service and for the members' providing pies for the Palmer sale, which occurred on the same day.

The worthy patron had these words of wisdom to share, "Best way to prepare for life is to begin living."

Beverly Davis and Clara Brewer reported on a visit to Rob Morris's chapter for the visit of the worthy grand matron and worthy grand patron.

Charles and Mae Ellen Gift gave an anniversary offering, and Charles gave a birthday offering. Lynda Foster also gave an anniversary offering.

All area chapters are invited to the Sept 27 meeting.

Kevin Wagner was among the volunteer firefighters that assisted with parking at the Airport Day Sept 8.

Beverly Davis, Lavon Page and Clara Brewer attended a meeting at First Church in Fort Scott, Sept. 13 where they heard the Rev. Reed Hartford explain the Big Brother, Big Sister program.

John and Lorna Slater and Diann Brillhart attended the State Fair Sept 7- 9.

Bob and Glenda Miller, Jennifer Kelley and Dustin Miller enjoyed going this week to see their grandson and nephew Daniel Meisenhemeimer graduate from basic.
