James Lee Zornes, age 95, resident of Arma, Kansas, died Friday, September 14, 2007, at Mercy Health Center.
He was born August 20, 1912 in Bourbon County, Kansas, the son of Robert Zornes and Myrtle Underwood Zornes. James married Doris Kendig in 1937. She preceded him in death. He married Georgia R. Houdashelt Toney on April 7, 1967, in Columbus, Kansas. She died on June 17, 2000.
He farmed most of his life and also was manager of the Hudson Service Station both in Pittsburg and Fort Scott. James was baptized in the Cherry Grove Baptist Church. He was a past member of the Hiattville Masonic Lodge. His hobbies include gardening and fishing.
Survivors include his three sons; Eldon Zornes and his wife Donna, Uniontown, Kansas; Donald Zornes and his wife Carolyn, Arma, Kansas; and Alan Dean Zornes and wife Yvonne, Siloam Springs, Arkansas; two step-daughters, Josephine Davis and husband Mel, Crowburg, Kansas; and Arttie Vilmer and husband Bill, Sarcoxie, Missouri.
Also surviving is a sister, Ethel Laster, Topeka, Kansas; 21 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, one infant and John Zornes; 4 sisters, Ellen Zettl, Blanche McGhghy, Letha Zornes and Annie Keeney; and 4 grandchildren, Michael Zornes, Valerie Manwell, Becky Clay and William Vilmer, Jr.
The Rev. Jared Witt will conduct funeral services at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Cheney Witt Chapel.
Burial will follow in Memory Garden Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
