Ottilie "Tillie" Pauline Smith, 82 of Pleasanton, Kan., died Monday, Aug. 27, 2007, at University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan. She was born Dec. 21, 1924, in Frankfurt, Germany, the daughter of Justis and Charlotte Desch Giehs. As a young woman, she was drafted into the German Army. She married Dale Smith on July 20, 1948 in Frankfurt, Germany. He preceded her in death on July 8, 2002.
Tillie became an American citizen in 1959. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Order of Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death also by her parents and one sister, Marie Iber.
Survivors include two sons, Harold Smith and Phyllis of Fort Scott, Kan., and John Smith and Janet of Pleasanton, Kan.; one daughter, Rita Walrod and David of Pleasanton, Kan.; one brother, Berthold Giehs of Fochenhime, Germany; one sister, Inge Cress of Bod Hamburg, Germany; grandchildren, Michelle Walrod, Marsha Milstead, Brandon and Jason Smith, Tara and Tori Fleck and great grandchildren, Hunter Milstead and Ava Jade Edwards.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 31, 2007 at the Coffel-Schneider Chapel, Pleasanton, Kan. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time at the chapel. Contributions are suggested to the American Heart Association or American Cancer Society. Interment will be in the Woodland Cemetery, Mound City, Kan.
