Lester Carl Marshall passed on Friday, July 13, 2007 at 11 a.m. from lung cancer at age 86.

Carl was born in West Mineral, Kan. in 1921. After living and raising his family in California for 56 years and working as a general building contractor, he retired to Girard at age 80.Carl married Viola Hinkle on August 18, 1940. She preceded him in death as did his parents, Riley and Theo Marshall, a brother Charles Marshall, and sisters Xenia Allen and Virginia Chance. Carl farmed in Cherokee and operated a steam shovel in the coal mines there, before moving to California in 1946.

Survivors include his three daughters, Carol Marshall of Grass Valley, California, Joyce Wisecarver of Antioch, California, and Joan Spraggins of Penn Valley, Calif.; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; brothers Ray Marshall of Pittsburg, Kan., Dean Marshall of Fort Scott, Kan., and a sister, Ann Martens of Pittsburg.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m., Thursday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m., Wednesday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home where friends may call after 9 a.m., Wednesday. The family will receive friends at the family home at 409 N Ozark after the funeral services. As per his wishes, Carl will be entered into rest next to his wife in Nevada City, Calif. Services will also be held in California.Memorials are suggested to the Harry Hynes Hospice and these may be left at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, 66743.
