Fair activity for the whole family
The Extension office has been extra busy in recent days, as we prepare for the county fair. Dates for this years fair are July 15-21. Fair events actually started Monday with judging of 4-H clothing construction and fashion revue.
The Bourbon County fair is organized by a volunteer fair board of community members. The Extension office is involved with the 4-H youth development activities. 4-H exhibits are a big part of the fair, but anyone may exhibit in open class. Fair catalogs were distributed in the Tribune several weeks ago or are available in the Extension office.
There are open class categories for almost anything in which you have an interest from antiques to scrapbooks, foods, crafts, quilts, photography, and horticulture. All you need to do is take your exhibit to the Myers Memorial Building on the north side of the fairgrounds Monday, July 16, 4 -- 8 p.m. where volunteers will help you get entered. Open class floriculture and pies may also be entered Tuesday morning.
It's more fun to be involved as a participant than a spectator. And it's exciting for youth and adults alike to see a ribbon on an exhibit they've entered.
A bake sale of prize-winning baked goods will start at 11 a.m. on Tuesday in the Myers building. The Family and Community Education (FCE) Council appreciates exhibitors donating their baked goods with proceeds going to community service projects, including a college scholarship, book project for newborns, elementary essay and art contest, county fair prizes, and educational programs. There will be lots of delicious breads, rolls, cookies, cakes pies, and other baked good for sale.
Speaking of food, meals and snacks are available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. in the 4-H building. Breakfast burritos, taco salads, fried chicken dinners and homemade pie are among the tasty offerings. Proceeds help fund 4-H activities in Bourbon County.
Free health screenings will be offered to the public on Wednesday evening, 5-8 p.m., in the merchants building. Personnel from Mercy Healthy System will do blood pressure and cardiovascular disease risk assessments free of charge. FCE members have organized the activity as a community service project.
The 4-H Fashion Revue will be Thursday, July 19, 5:30 p.m. at the Fort Scott Community College Round Room. Along with 4-H members modeling outfits they have sewn or purchased, several 4-H members will be performing talent numbers during the show. The public is invited to attend.
Plan also to attend the livestock judging events during fair week and nightly events at the grandstands.
The Extension office in the courthouse will be closed during fair week. The office will move to the fairgrounds where the phone number will be (620) 223-3455.
It's sure to be a fun-filled week at the Bourbon County Fair. I hope to see you there!
