A Fort Scott man was injured after his car was struck by a semi-truck at the corner of 12th Street and U.S. Highway 69 early Friday afternoon.

A report from the Kansas Highway Patrol said that shortly before 1 p.m. Friday, a 2003 Ford Taurus, driven by 82-year old Maurice Fletcher, Fort Scott, was eastbound on 12th Street when he ran a stop light at that intersection and was struck by a 1980 Peterbilt semi headed south on U.S. 69.

The semi struck the car on the driver's side, forcing the vehicle into a guardrail on the side of the highway, which caused excessive damage to the car's front end.

The report from the Fort Scott Police Department, which sent officers to assist at the scene, said that Fletcher suffered a concussion and possible abrasion on his face. Fletcher was transported by local emergency first response personnel to Mercy Health Center for treatment of his injuries, the KHP report said.

The driver of the semi, Casey Morris, 28, Butler, Mo., was not injured, the KHP report said. Both drivers were wearing safety restraints at the time of the accident. Neither vehicle contained passengers.

The Fort Scott Fire Department also responded to the scene.

The tractor-trailer rig had a Missouri license plate and included a 1994 Timpte trailer, which also had a Missouri tag, the KHP report said.

Both vehicles were towed away from the accident scene after law enforcement officials cleared the area.

The injury accident was not labeled as a hit-and-run, the report said.
