Hiattville Grand area news

On June 23, Mr. and Mrs. Ron Palmer went to Topeka to work on the Grand chapter office building. That afternoon Mrs. Palmer participated in a Legislative Forum for the Second Congressional District at the Ramada Inn. That same evening the Palmers attended a reception honoring Reuben Berg, General Grand chapter committee visionary for O.E.S., hosted by his chapter.

The evening of June 24, the Palmers attended the closing activities for the National State Teachers of the Year conference being held in Kansas City and hosted by the states of Kansas and Missouri. Mrs. Palmer will gave the official "Welcome To Kansas" greeting. She was the Kansas Teacher of the Year in 1982.

Several members of the congregation of Hiattville's U.M.C. met at the parsonage june 23 and did routine cleaning in preparations for the new Pastor Andrew Smith, who will be moving in this week.

A large crowd enjoyed a barbecue and picnic on the church lawn that same evening. Joe Ludlum and David Schwalm were the "chefs." This was a farewell for the Petersons. Several in the group enjoyed playing ball and other enjoyed visiting and watching the game.

Jonathan and Kayla Hightower were among the campers at Camp Chippwa this past week.

Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Fry and family enjoyed visiting this past weekend with his sister Lisa in Arkansas.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ludlum hosted a birthday dinner June 24 for Lloyd Callow's 85. Mr. and Mrs. Rick Biles and Elizabeth came from Topeka to help him celebrate.

Visitors of worship June 24 were Rev. Daniel and Mrs. Kim, Anna, Mary and Kayla Hightower's two girlfriends. Rev. Kim is a former pastor of the church. Those sharing birthday offerings were Melinda Harper, Mabel Miller, Lloyd Callow and Megan Peterson. Pastor Dallas and Connie Peterson gave an anniversary offering. As this was the last Sunday for Pastor Dallas to fill the pulpit, Cindy and David Schwalm presented the Petersons with gifts from the church, one being an album of pictures of most of the congregation with individual greeting from each family.

A letter of transfer was issued for Mr. and Mrs. Tom Woodworth as they will unite with Wesley U.M.C. in Iola.

Pastor Dallas' sermon was read from Apalations 3:23-29 and 1 Kings 19;1-15a.

Ideal Chapter 3690ES met thursday with Effie and Dean Mitchell presided in the EAst. The Marshall draped the Charter in memory of Georgia James. The members stood in the reverent attitude as the worthy matron read a poem and the organist softly played a hymn..

Shirley Palmer, General Grand chapter education chairman and Grand Trustee of Kansas O.E.S. was given a special welcome.

In honor of Father's Day the worthy matron read a poem about the most fun I ever had with my dad.

The minutes of the last two stated meetings were approved as read.

The treasurer's report was given by Margaret McDermed. She also gave the sunshine report., stating she has sent sympathy cards to the families of Louise Morrison and Georgia James and a get well card to Beverly Geiger who is recovering from recent knee surgery.

The associate matron thanked Mrs. Palmer for the refreshments for the meeting and said she would provide them for the Sept. 13 meeting as well. The chapter will vacation during the months of July and August.

Several bills were allowed and ordered paid. Thank you notes were read from Isabel Adams, worthy grand matrons, Kathy Johnson, Grand Esther, and Judith Caputo, Grand Marshall. A letter from Joyce Saylor, Chairman of the Emporia Charity benefit was read and discussed. Instead of making up a "basket of goodies" for the auction, the members voted to send a monetary contribution. Mrs. Palmer will deliver the check for the chapter.

At the last meeting the worthy grand matron asked the coin march be given to the special projects. On proper motion the chapter decided to send the $45 to the scholarship fund.

The usual contribution will be sent to Estarl in memory of Louise Morrison and Georgia James.

The worthy matron thanked the officers that changes stations for the evening, Linda Foster, Agnes Armstrong and Jeannie Hart.

Lynda Foster reported on the reception for the Grand Ruth at Chanute. Those attending this meeting besides herself were Beverly Davis, Shirley Palmer, Effie Mitchell and Clara Brewer.

The two fathers present, Charles Gift and Dean Mitchell were presented back of Esther's chair and introduced. They in turn told about their families. The worthy matron read a short story to them about what makes a dad. The organist played "That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine" in their honor. They received special "snacks" from the worthy matrons.

The worthy patron thanked Mrs. Palmer for getting the pictures hung in the chapter room that she has gotten from the old chapter building. She said that Ron helped them get hung before the last meeting. The worthy patron had some interesting words of wisdom the share.

Refreshments of fruit pizza, cheese, summer sausage, crackers and punch were served by Shirley Palmer and Beverly Davis.
