Kathryn J. "Kathy" Bishop, 63, long-time Erie elementary teacher, died at 10:20 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2007, at her home. Death followed a one-year battle with cancer.
She was born August 28, 1943, at Fort Scott, to Wayne "Jers" and Jenny (Shipley) Bayless. She grew up in Blue Mound and graduated from Blue Mound High School in 1961. She attended Iola Junior College and graduated from Kansas State College of Pittsburg in 1971. She earned her master's degree from Pittsburg State University in 1986.
On June 30, 1963, she married Roy A. Bishop at Blue Mound and they moved to Erie in 1968. She taught 5th grade in St. Paul for two years and 5th grade in Erie one year before beginning a 26-year career as 1st grade teacher in Erie. After her retirement, she continued as a substitute teacher, occasionally in long term situations.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in Erie and was an elder in the church. She served on the Erie City Council and was an avid gardener and shopper. She loved to dote on her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Roy A. Bishop, of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Dawn Bishop, Olathe; one daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Aaron Ost, Lincoln, Neb.; three grandchildren, Blake, Luke and Claire Bishop, Olathe; one brother and sister-in-law, Stanley and Mary Ellen Bayless, Wichita; and many, many friends. Her parents preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church in Erie, with Rev. Debi Lorenz officiating. Burial will be in the Sunny Slope Cemetery at Blue Mound.
The family will receive friends at the Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Erie from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Memorials are suggested to either the First Christian Church of Erie, or the American Cancer Society. They may be left at or sent to the funeral home at P.O. Box 182, Erie, Kan., 66733.
