Violet Chapter commemorates 10-year anniversary

Friday, June 1, 2007

Violet Chapter met May 23 with Worthy Matron Karen Demm and Worthy Patron Raymond Flanner, presiding. Mrs. Demm welcomed everyone and read a poem "To Have a Friend." She gave special recognition to Chapter members Mary Beckford and Don Kelley, both Grand Representatives.

Lifetime member Mary Nell Beth had given the secretary a scrapbook of the early years of Violet Chapter. It was put together by the late Edna Golladay, former 75-year member of Violet Chapter, and will be placed in the Chapter display case.

Communications were from Worthy Grand Matron Isabel Adams and Worthy Grand Patron Mike Towner concerning coming events with special mention of the Greensburg Tornado Disaster Fund; from Dean Wyant, Grand General Chapter Committee member; and from William Fischer of Arma Demolay. Invitations to special meetings were read from Chapters in Parker, La Cygne, Fort Scott, Chanute, Pittsburg and Topeka.

Chapter members voted to send a donation to Kansas Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star for the Greensburg Disaster Fund. Under Good of the Order, Mrs. Demm read an article about Memorial Day and the meaning of the 13 folds of the American flag when presented to families of veterans.

Since Violet Chapter was chartered May 13, 1897, this month marks its 110th anniversary, which Mrs. Demm observed by reading excerpts from the Chapter's history.

Members were reminded of the Fulton Masonic Lodge picnic at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 9 in the West Liberty church yard and the Chapter's open meeting at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 23 for the presentation of 50-year pins and 60 and 70-year certificates.

Mrs. Demm thanked her two substitute officers and Chapter closed in form. Refreshments were served in the dining area after the meeting.
