100 YEARS AGO

(1907)

Dr. Miller, of Uniontown, who purchased the Hellman property at Eddy and Third Street, was here on business today. Dr. Miller will remodel the property and will make it his home before school commences. He will engage in the practice of medicine in Fort Scott. He has lived in this county a great number of years.

It develops that the stranger who robbed the W.R. Beaddows home over on the East side yesterday is the man who sole O.D. Couch's hat from his office yesterday evening. The man seems to be a professional crook. He remains in the calaboose.

Herbert Lardner went to Fulton last night to address the graduating class.

Undertaker Konantz expects to occupy his new business building this fall. The barns are already completed and work on the main office building will begin soon.

The first express car filled with horses ever to leave Fort Scott went north over the Frisco this afternoon when 28 horses owned by Higgins brothers were started for Doylestown, Pa. The charge of expressing the horses was $500. The car was sent out by the Adams Express Company.

Miss Marie Dunsworth of the Smith Restaurant is off duty. She was stung on the right hand by a bee yesterday.

The heaviest rain Fort Scott and vicinity has experienced for several months came this morning when 1.02 inches fell in about 30 minutes. The moisture was of great help to early corn and truck gardens.

Swimming lessons started yesterday for 131 boys at the YMCA. A number of expert swimmers have are assisting Melvin Williams, activities director. These include Bob Baxter, Bob Bruce, Tom Moreland, Frank Bishop, Edward Beal, Herb Crane and Melvin Bloomfield.

50 YEARS AGO

(1957)

Death came today to Mrs. J.S. (Aunt Libbie) Cummings, 95, this morning at Mercy Hospital. The widow of the late Dr. Cummings of Bronson she had lived for a number of years in Fort Scott with her daughter, Mrs. Mabel Hughes of 1202 Burke, of The Tribune staff. On her birthday in 1881 she married Dr. Cummings and "We grew with Bronson," she told an interviewer when she reached her 93rd birthday. Mrs. Cummings was the first matron of the Bronson Chapter No. 65, Order of the Easter Star, as she was one of the charter members. She was the first president of the Bourbon County Federation of Clubs.

Sale of houses: The City of Fort Scott will accept bids on the dwellings known as 110, 120 and 124 Buchanan, formerly owned by J.J. Ferris) located on Blair Park Site.

25 YEARS AGO

(1982)

Jim Mertz, widely known Bourbon County rancher, died Sunday. He was one of the founders of the Bourbon County Fair Association and served on the fair board for many years. He had owned and operated the Arctic Ice & Feed Co. on South National Avenue for 13 years before he sold the business to devote full time to ranching.

Mr. and Mrs. Leo Hopkins will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary with a reception June 6 at the First Church of God. She is the former Margaret Newcomb. She is credit manager for Edmiston's. Mr. Hopkins retired in 1975 as brakeman from the Frisco Railroad.
