Residents celebrate graduates, remember fallen

Beverly Davis and Lynda Foster drove to Scott City on May 20 to visit Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Davis and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Mark Davis and girls for a few days.

While there, they attended Christopher Davis' eighth grade graduation. They also attended the boat races that Mark Davis and little daughter Macy participated in. The fathers and daughters have to construct their own boat for the event.

Visitors who attended worship services May 20 were Mike and Kolby Page, Mr. and Mrs. Dustin Miller and boys and the three Kelly girls from Girard. Pastor Peterson's sermon was titled "Christ's Fulfillment: It's All About God." Scripture was read from Acts 1: 1-11, Luke 24: 44-53, and Ephesians 1: 15-23. The administrative board met immediately after Sunday School with Ronnie Brown presiding.

Kevin and Rachel Wagner, Paula and Clara Brewer, and John and Eva Wagner were among those attending the graduation of the kindergarten class of Fort Scott Christian Heights school on May 24 at the Parkway Church of God. Kole Wagner was one of the graduates.

Faith Heaton of Holly Springs, N.C. has been here visiting. A group of friends enjoyed having dinner with her Friday evening, May 25.

Mr. and Mrs. Steve Plaster of Florida are spending some time at their home here in Hiattville. Other visitors at church on May 27 were Kelly Ludlum and Matt Shertz, who spent the weekend with her parents, Joe and Ann Ludlum, Mike and Kelly Page, and Chelsie Monroe of Fort Scott.

Dean Mitchell gave a birthday offering during worship on May 27. Pastor Peterson's sermon was titled "Fire of the Spirit." Scripture was read from Romans 8: 14-17, and John 14: 8-17, 25-27. Rev. Ken Woods will be the guest speaker next Sunday.

Congratulations to Katelyn Vincent on all the awards she received at her eighth grade graduation at Uniontown and also to Jamie Collins for receiving the Golden Glove award at the softball banquet.

Jessica Schwalm will be doing some biology research this summer while she is home from college.

Herman Werholtz enjoyed having a visit on Saturday with his brother Rudy, from Lawrence. Mr. and Mrs. Roger Werholtz brought his father for the visit. While here, the group visited several cemeteries.

Clara Brewer enjoyed visiting with Oma Mitchell on Friday at her apartment in the Presbyterian Village. Adam Foster is home for the summer.

UMW will meet June 11 for their final meeting of the summer. Judy Tripp will present the lesson.

Friends are invited to an open meeting at 7 p.m. June 14 at the Masonic Hall. Mike Towner, Worthy Grand Patron, will be present to present 50 year pins to Charles and May Ellen Gift. Dorothy Ketner and Clara Brewer will receive 60 year certificates.

David and Cindy Schwalm and family enjoyed spending part of the Memorial Day weekend with family at Stockton Lake.

Mrs. Helen Maloney of Iola is recuperating from a bad fall at the home of her son and wife, Earl and Janice Maloney.

Karen Endicott-Coyan recently spent a few days in Pennsylvania visiting with her granddaughters. While there, she attended the graduation of the oldest from the fifth grade class.

Ideal Chapter 369, O.E.S., met May 24 with Effie and Dean Mitchell presiding in the East. The Charter was draped in memory of Mrs. Doris Stelle by the Marshall. Mrs. Stelle was a 50 year member of Eastern Star. More plans were discussed for the June 14 meeting.

Letters were received from the Worthy Grand Matron and Worthy Grand Patron, Dean Weyant and William Fischer. Invitations were read from Topeka Chapter, Rob Morris Chapter, Swan Chapter, Sunflower Chapter, and Oberlin Chapter.

Members will meet at the Chapter for a cleaning day at 1:30 p.m. June 13.

The Chapter ratified the constitutional change that had been presented at the Grand Chapter.

A memorial service was held for the 11 members that have died since Memorial Day last year. Their names were read and the Worthy Matron read a beautiful poem. The organist played the hymn "When I Take My Vacation In Heaven." The Worthy Patron had words of wisdom for us. He also gave a birthday offering.

Shirley Palmer reported on the reception for the Grand Esther which she and Ron had attended at Derby Chapter. Refreshments of summer sausage, cheese, crackers, ice cream and drinks were served by Gayla Croan and Lynda Foster.

Mr. and Mrs. Bob Miller hosted a farewell dinner on May 20 for their grandson Daniel Meisenheimer. Daniel is entering the service and will be stationed at Fort Benning, Ga. Special guests at the dinner were his great-grandparents, Glen and Ethel Smith, and Elmer and Mabel Miller.
