100 YEARS AGO (1907)

Fern Lake Park opens Sunday. Bring your lunch baskets and stay all day. Free concert afternoon and evening. Two shows every night. Gate admission 5 cents. Round trip street car fee 10 cents.

J. R. Stapleton and family have moved back to Fulton. Of course, Mr. Stapleton is still custodian of the county's finances. "Jim" spends his Sundays with his family. When his term of office expires this fall he will go back to his old home town to take up his abode. Mrs. Stapleton and her son Arthur have been up there since shortly after their return from a winter's sojourn in the South.

75 YEARS AGO (1932)

T. F. Yost, county agent, has begun the use of a spray to kill the bindweeds carpeting the vacant lot just to the south of the Chamber of Commerce. In some way, this weed pest, in the past year or two, gained a foothold in the lot mentioned and has overrun it. The chemical for use in killing the weeds was provided by the Penniman Hardware Company and Mr.

Yost bought the sprayer to be used in applying the chemical.

It will be necessary to spray the plants thoroughly at least three times.

Mothers of members of the Northeast Scott 4- H Club were guests at the May meeting at the Maple Grove School.

Forty-seven members were present, all of whom brought their mothers. Some "dads" and other interested parties were in the audience.

A successful term of school was closed Thursday at the Fulton School. The grades given out were reported as being good. One eighth grade student, Wilma Cordes, who has attended Fulton school the past eight years, has a remarkable record of attendance, missing only 1 1/ 2 days, which occurred in her second year of school.

50 YEARS AGO (1957)

Phyllis Hudson, who led the ninth grade honor roll for 1956- 57 at the junior high school, had a point total of 88, only two points short of the maximum possible total of 90.

Nancy Benedict had 82 and Christie Frick, 81.

Sixteen persons have enrolled in the summer session which opened Monday at the Fort Scott Junior College, and nine others have indicated that they may enroll.

25 YEARS AGO (1982)

Eight Fort Scott High School junior boys have been selected to participate in the annual American Legion Boys State at the University of Kansas. Bob Waters, Boys State chairman for Clair C.

Harkey Post, lists the following: Wayne Schwalm, Tim Mullane, David Watkins, Mark Gilmore, Mike Hembree, Paul Lee, Matt Witt, Ernie Bruner and Sam Riley.
