Writers Club donates book to library
On May 19 the Fort Scott Writers Club met in the Community Room at Presbyterian Village. Attending were acting President/Secretary and Treasurer/ Reporter Joy Melendy, Ruth Bahr, Judy Howser, Caroline Lowery, Marie Marshall, Velma Reavis and Grace Myers. President/ Secretary Kathleen Durbin was not present because her husband was hospitalized at the time.
Melendy called the meeting to order at 10: 05 a. m. Bahr read the minutes of the last meeting and Melendy gave the treasurer's report.
A motion was made and carried to allow residents of Presbyterian Village, who are interested, to join Fort Scott Writers Club free of dues charge.
Ted Kooser's book, "The Poetry Home Repair Manual," was presented to the Fort Scott Public Library. It was donated by the Fort Scott Writers Club in memory of Beverly Lyons.
KAC state-wide writing contest is open April 1 - June 18. The theme is "Pen Life as Art, Write from the Heart." You do not have to be a KAC member to enter. For information about this contest contact Marie Marshall at (620) 223-2089.
Echoes of the Trail Cowboy Poetry Gathering begins June 810. A contest will be featured for fifth and sixth graders to try their hand at writing cowboy poetry.
Melendy gave the presentation for May. Each member was given the first few paragraphs of a story and asked to complete it or make an outline of thoughts to complete the story. There were some very interesting ideas.
Members read some of their recent work: Bahr - "Unpinned Vacation"; Lowery - "Good Friends"; Marshall - "Time Span" and "Lost Treasure." Melendy read her completed story of "The Rum Bottle" and "He Just Followed Me Home."
Marshall will give the June presentation.
There are no birthdays reported for the month of May and only one anniversary for Caroline and Reuben Lowery on May 23.

Hervey completes bachelor's degree
On May 10, 1LT Curtis A. Hervey, age 39, former Fort Scott Police officer, graduated from the late Jerry Falwell's Liberty University's Distance Learning Program with a Multidisciplinary (MLDS) bachelor's of science degree with concentrations in religion and business. 1LT Hervey, who is the Executive Officer of Aco. 772 Engineer Company, formerly the 891st, in Pittsburg, is pending promotion to captain next year. With the continued support of his loving wife Stacey and sons Ryan and Jordan, 1LT Hervey starts his masters degree in Human Services, with leadership concentration, later this month.
