DORIS LORETTA FOWLER STELLE

Doris Loretta Fowler Stelle, age 90, died May 19, 2007, at 9:50 p.m. at the Arma Care Center, Arma. She was born December 5, 1916, at the Fowler home in Arcadia, to James T. Fowler and Ada Davenport Fowler. Doris attended elementary school and high school in Arcadia, graduating in 1934. She attended Kansas State Teacher's College after which she worked at Commerce Bank in Kansas City, Missouri. Doris married Robert Frank Stelle on February 17, 1940. He preceded her in death on October 14, 1976. Three children were born to the marriage: Sandra Sue, William Thomas, and Katharine. Having lived in the Arcadia area for most of her life, Doris purchased the original family home after her mother's death in 1985. Doris worked at Home State Bank, Arcadia, as director and cashier for 33 years, retiring in 1985. She was active in the community as treasurer of the Arcadia High School Alumni Association for 40 years. She served as treasurer for the Sheffield Cemetery Board, the City of Arcadia, the Fowler Investment Company, and the Arcadia Investment Company. She was a member of the Arcadia Christian Church. She was also a member of Eastern Star, Daisy Chapter No. 45. Doris expressed her creativity through the years in her ceramics, sewing, quilting, and decorating. She enjoyed vacationing at Crag-O-Lea, Pineville, Missouri, and documenting and sharing family history. One would always see Doris attired in a hat from her vast collection.

Survivors include Susie Stelle, Pittsburg, Tom and Nancie Stelle, Lenexa, Katharine Spigarelli, Webb City, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Jim Engle, Little Rock, Arkansas, Ted and Cindy Engle, Cincinnati, Ohio, Nichole and Rick Garnett, South Bend, Indiana, Will and Amanda Stelle, Lenexa, Zach and Jessica McDonald, Springfield, Missouri, Grand McDonald, Webb City, Missouri, Doug Stelle, Lenexa,; two step-grandchildren, Brand and Janae Likens, Leawood, Greg and Erika Likens, Leawood; eight great-grandchildren, Isaac, Madison, and Morgan Engle, Margaret, Thomas and Elizabeth Garnett, Hailey and Andrew Stelle; five step-great-grandchildren, Jackson, Emma, and Greta Likens, and Audrey and Amelia Likens. Additional survivors include Ione Guthrie, Nevada, Missouri, Peachy Bedene, Arma, Jo Ferraro, Nevada, Missouri, Helen Knoll, Frontenac, and David Fowler, Topeka. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Vernon, Paul, Glen, Bill, George and J.T. and sisters, Thelma Renfro and Ellen Jeter.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, 2007, at the Arcadia Christian Church with the Rev. Bob Dickey officiating.
