He joined the Air Force and served in Vietnam and later re-enlisted with the Navy. Richard spent 20 years of his life serving in the Armed Forces; he served in both Vietnam and the Persian Gulf.
Richard was active in Boy Scouts as a youth, was a Civil War historian, was proud of his Indian heritage and culture, and was a very patriotic person. Richard is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Pat Bonner of the home; parents, Richard and Thelma Bonner of Grove, Oklahoma; sister, L. Jayne Johnson of Haysville; brother, David M. Bonner of Santa Maria, California; nieces, Theresa Anderson, Ali Baker, and Breeann Bonner; nephew, Jerrod Johnson; great-niece, Kiersten Bonner; great-nephews, Clayton Anderson and Drew Baker. Visitation from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, May 10. Service at 9:30 a.m. Friday. Both will take place at Lakeview Funeral Home. Internment will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Fort Scott National Cemetery.
