Fort Scott Codes Administrator Brent Crays is leaving the city to start his own car detail and stereo business next month.

Crays recently turned in his resignation, with his last day being April 13, he announced at Tuesday's commission meeting.

"I want to thank everybody that gave me the opportunity to serve the people of Fort Scott," Crays said. "I'm a person that believes in the best in people. I look for solutions rather than trying to beat people down into the ground. I've tried to work with people to find a solution to accomplish the goal."

Next month would've marked Crays' six year anniversary with the city.

He's wanted to have a car service shop for a long time. And on May 1, Crays will get that opportunity.

The shop will be at 802 E. Wall St., which was Larry Ballou's former small engine repair shop. At first, he's going to only detail cars and then add the car stereo aspect of the business.Crays said hopefully six months will give him enough time to fix up the building so he can offer car stereo services.

Crays has 13 years of experience with car stereo service, from installation to sales.

"I'm going to miss the people," Crays said. "I'm very much a people-person, and I'm going to miss working with the people. All the people here at city hall are great. They're kind of like a family. That's what they told me in the beginning, and it was true.

"I know I've been able to give six years knowing that I've done the best that I could possibly do.I'm now at the point where I know this is a good transitional time in my life and am ready to move on to the next phase."

Commissioner Barbara Wood said Crays has been an upgrade to the position, bring it up to a new level.

"I hate to see you go," Wood said at Tuesday's meeting.
