Jack served in the United States Navy in WW II as a Pharmacist's Mate and again during the Korean Conflict as a Hospital Corpsman. He was a member of the Olson-Frary-Burkhart Post 1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by a son, John Matthews and his wife, Luisa of Lone Tree, Colorado, two daughters, Jackie Bryan and her husband, Fred of Tabernash, Colorado and Charlotte Williams and her husband, Marvin of Fort Scott, a step-daughter, Patricia Coleman of Ashville, North Carolina, three grandsons, David Williams, Brian Williams and his wife, Becca, and Ryan Matthews and his wife, Jodi, two granddaughters, Lisa Melberg, and Missy McCormic, and four great-grandchildren, Catherine and Logan Melberg, Addyson Williams, and Chandler Matthews. In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents.
Bishop James McNeley will conduct graveside rites at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 4, 2007 at the Fort Scott National Cemetery. Olson-Frary-Burkhart Post 1165 V.F.W. will perform Military Honors. Friends and family will meet at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home at 10 a.m. on Wednesday for a Visitation and leave for the Cemetery at 10:45 a.m. The Family suggests memorials to either the American Cancer Society or the Fort Scott Manor Activity Fund.
