Leona Brooker

Leona Mae Brooker, age 86, former resident of rural Fort Scott, and more recently of Medicalodge, died Saturday, March 24, 2007, at Mercy Health Center. She was born June 8, 1920 in Fort Scott, the daughter of Hubert Winklepleck and Freda Allen Winklepleck. Leona married Clyde Elmo Brooker on June 12, 1937 in West Plains, Missouri. He preceded her in death on September 7, 2000.

The couple did Missionary work all over the world for over 30 years. They traveled at their own expense to every Continent except Australia. Leona was a member of the Community Christian Church and the 55 Plus Sunday school class. She also was a member of the Union Bend Needle Workers. Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Karleskint and husband Tom, and Carol Robinson and husband Jerry, all of Fort Scott. Also surviving is a brother, Fred Winklepleck in Maryland; a sister, Alberta Young, Olathe; 10 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Jack Brooker; grandson, Matt Karleskint; and a brother, Delbert Winklepleck.

The Rev. Kevin Moyers will conduct funeral services at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Community Christian Church. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m., Monday in the Cheney Witt Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Community Christian Church and may be sent to Cheney Witt Chapel, P.O.
