Wayne E. Powell, age 69, of Parsons, died at 3:35 p.m. Sunday, January 7, 2007 at the Freeman West Hospital in Joplin. He had been in ill health, but his death was unexpected.
He was born Feb. 6, 1937. in Hiattville to Albert E. and Sarah A. Hixon Powell. He grew up in the Hiattville and Hepler areas. He served two years in the U.S. Army and spent 18 months in Germany during that time.
On July 25, 1959 he married Wanda J. Rose in Fort Scott. They lived in Fort Scott and Coffeyville before moving to Parsons in October of 1971.
Early in his adult years he farmed and drove a truck for a beverage company in Fort Scott. He worked for the MMT Railroad until he retired in 1980 because of his health. He also had driven a transport van for the Renzenberger Co.
During his youth he attended the Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda of the home; three daughters, Pamela Peterson and husband Gary, Cocoa, Florida, Linda Heady and husband Leon, Parsons, and Ginger Powell; nine grandchildren, Jeremy Wetzstein, Matthew Wetzstein, Ashley Heady, Jessica Wetzstein, Brandon Heady, Shane Heady, Tiffany Sutton, Amanda "Mandy" Powell and Tyler Powell; four great-grandchildren; four brothers, George Powell, Garden City, Don Powell and his wife Sue, Parsons, Joe Powell and his wife JoNell, Bay City, Texas, and Tom Powell and his wife Bea, Fort Scott; and two sisters, Anna May Smith, Fort Scott and Mary Estensen, Topeka.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Edward, and a son, Brad Powell, who died in January 7, 2001. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Schulze officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Fort Scott National Cemetery.
