Mildred Elizabeth Burt, age 91, former resident of 423 W. Second St., Fort Scott, Kansas, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at the Garden Valley Manor in North Kansas City, Mo.
She was born Sept. 15, 1915 on the Mesa near Raton, New Mexico, the daughter of J.F. Wimmer and Beatrice Turner Wimmer. Her parents moved the family to Fulton, Kan. in the fall of 1916 when she was 13 months old. She married Dalton D. Burt on Feb. 14, 1958 in Miami, Okla. He preceded her in death on Dec. 29, 2005.
Mildred graduated from Fulton High School and began teaching at a rural Kansas school. She continued teaching at the Fulton Junior High School while attending Pittsburg State University in the evening. She taught for 17 years in the Uniontown elementary school system. She was nominated for Kansas Teacher of the Year in 1979. She continued to substitute for the Uniontown schools until the age of 84. Her teaching career was a total of 57 years.
Mildred was a member of the Grace Baptist Tabernacle.
Survivors include her daughter, Paula Carlson and husband Scott, Kansas City, Mo.; two grandsons, Noah Joseph Carlson and wife Brittni, and Gabriel Douglas Carlson and fiance, Hannah; and one sister, Newata Hill, of Washington state. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Joe Wimmer.
The Rev. Steve MacArthur will conduct funeral services for Mildred Elizabeth Burt at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, at the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow at 11 p.m. in the U.S. National Cemetery. The family will receive friends for visitation Friday morning from 8:30 a.m. until service time at the Chapel.
