Franklin DeWitt "Dee" Young, 86, of Fort Scott died Monday evening, October 23, 2006 at the Mercy Health Center. He was born on April 11, 1920 in Fort Scott, the son of Paul Leland and Thelma Neta Williams Young. He married Era Lucile Batten on August 19, 1940 in Nevada, Missouri, she preceded him in death on June 1, 1999.

Dee served in the United States Marine Corps during WWII, seeing action in Okinawa, the Ryukyu Islands, and the Occupation of China. He returned to Fort Scott after the war, where he worked for Batten's Dairy for many years, and then retired from the Hermann Lumber Company in 1982 after 17 years.

He is survived by a son; Jimmie Lee Young of Palmetto, Florida, a daughter; LaDonna Cox of Fort Scott, a sister; Betty Lee Westhusing of Springfield, Missouri, grandchildren; Becky Gorman of Arizona, Tina Schilling, of Fort Scott, R.D. Eaton, of Fort Scott, Lori Brown, of Georgia, Jason Young, of Virginia, Paula Schreckenstein, of Georgia, and Wendy Hall, of Virginia, three step-grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both his parents, and a brother; Paul A. Young.

Pastor Tim O'Neal will conduct graveside services 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 26, 2006 at the National Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by Olson-Frary-Burkhart Post 1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Services are under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home.
