BUD PAYNE

Howard "Bud" Payne, age 72, of rural Arcadia, died on his ranch, Friday, October 20, 2006. He was born on August 25, 1934 in Fort Scott, the son of James Edward and Sarah Isabelle Orr Payne. He married Billie Kay Mobley on September 14, 1955 in Miami, Oklahoma. She survives of the home.

He graduated from Fort Scott High School and then from Wentworth Military Academy. He was a member of the Fort Scott National Guard. In 1961 he and Billie Kay moved to the family farm where they raised cattle until his death. Bud went to work for the Western Insurance Company in 1967 and was an underwriter until 1992 when he retired from Safeco Insurance Company.

In addition to his wife, Billie Kay, he is survived by a daughter, Shala Reneé Payne, Neosho, Mo.; a sister, Virginia Lyons, Fort Scott; three nephews; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 25, 2006 at the graveside in the Large Cemetery, also known as the Pleasant View Cemetery. Family and friends will meet at 9 a.m. on Wednesday for a visitation at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home and leave for the cemetery at 9:30 a.m. Memorials may be made to either the American Lung Association or the American Heart Association and sent to, or left in the care of, the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home, 15 W.
