Donald R. Nelson, age 92, of Elsmore, passed away Monday, October 2, 2006, at the Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute, Kansas. He was born September 9, 1914, at Elsmore, Kansas, the son of Peter and Lotti (Strom) Nelson.
Don was a lifetime resident of the Elsmore area until he moved to Heritage Health Care in Chanute, Kansas in August of 2005. He graduated from Elsmore High School in 1933. On October 28, 1937, he was united in marriage to Pauline V. Ohlfest in Iola, Kansas. Five children were born to this union. Pauline preceded him in death on June 2, 1999.
Don was a lifelong farmer in the Elsmore area. In addition to farming, he worked in the oil business and operated a grocery store from 1952 to 1956. He was a member of the Elsmore United Methodist Church and served several years on the Allen County Community College Board of Trustees.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, George Nelson; and two sisters, Doris Johnson and Florence Ludlum.
Don is survived by four daughters, Kay Elder of Humboldt, Trudy Bassett of Payson, Ariz., Roxine Spencer of Thayer and Tina Nelson of Elsmore; one son, Larry Nelson of Chanute; one sister, Charlotte Claughton of Kansas City; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 5, 2006, at the Elsmore United Methodist Church, with Pastor Lloyd Houk officiating. Interment will follow in the Elsmore Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home in Moran. Memorial contributions may be made to the Elsmore United Methodist Church and left in care of the funeral home.
