Bicycle fatality still under inquiry
Crawford County authorities are currently trying to determine exactly what happened when a Ford van on Tuesday struck an 11-year-old boy riding a bicycle in Girard.
Jacob Daniel Gobl, Girard, was rushed to Girard Hospital District No. 1 and later transported to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., where he died on Wednesday from injuries stemming from the accident, according to statement by Girard Police Department.
Around 3:20 p.m., officers arrived at the intersection of Summit and Prairie in Girard and learned that Gobl had been hit by a 1999 Ford Econoline F-250 service van driven by John B. Hand, 47, Pittsburg. Hand was not injured in the wreck.
Authorities at this time don't know circumstances surrounding the accident.
"We're trying to put the pieces together as to what took place," Girard Police Chief Jeff McDonald said during a telephone interview on Thursday.
The police department is waiting on official word from the county coroner as to the extent of Gobl's injuries, McDonald said.
The Crawford County Sheriff's Office is assisting Girard Police with the investigation and will release further information about the accident when it becomes available, McDonald said.
