Dorothy Anne Kirkwood

Dorothy Anne Kirkwood, age 80, of Fort Scott, Kansas died early Thursday morning, August 17, 2006 at St. Luke's Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri. She was born September 4, 1925 in Fort Scott, the daughter of Fred Higbee and Hazel Irene Roy Lewis. She married John Thomas Kirkwood September 18, 1983 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He preceded her in death August 14, 2006. She graduated from Fort Scott High School in 1947, and after attending Fort Scott Community College for a year, went on to graduate from Pittsburg State University. Dorothy taught school in Pleasanton, Kansas, for eight years, and also worked as a bookkeeper for the Ford Motor Company of Pleasanton. She was the office manager for Smith-Miller Construction Company of Pleasanton, as well as bookkeeper and office manager for Vince Owen Motors, which later became Tom Quick Motors. Dorothy retired in 1983. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fort Scott, and active in the church choir and as soloist.

Dorothy is survived by her stepsons; Chris Edward Kirkwood of Topeka, Kansas, and Thomas C. Kirkwood of Kansas City, Missouri, three sisters; Betty O'Dell of Fort Scott, Virginia Rutledge of Wichita, Kansas, and Pat Hartley, also of Wichita, and three grandchildren. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers; Joe Lewis, Harry Lewis, and Fred Lewis, and three sisters; Kathryn Derbidge, Hazel Abrahamson, and Helen Schroader.

Following cremation, the Rev. Paul Babcock will conduct graveside services for Dorothy and her husband, John, at 1:30 p.m. Thursday August 24, 2006 at the Fort Scott National Cemetery. Visitation will be 12 p.m. at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home prior to services, and family and friends will leave for the cemetery at 1:15 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Kansas Elks Training Center for the Handicapped, or the Elks National Foundation, or to the First United Methodist Church of Fort Scott and left in the care of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home, 15 West Wall Street, P.O.
