Old memories from the class of '49, Fort Scott (03/09/10)
This is our sixth story in our series on Fort Scott and school days. This story was written by Lawrence Allen, Class of '49. Hi Marilyn: I have really enjoyed the letters from our classmates, and always enjoy your regular articles in the Tribune. I have a lot of memories and will tell of some of them, and if you need to shorten my comments please do so as I am sort of windy in my old age...
'Something new' Passover meal to be held March 29 in Arcadia (03/09/10)
Thirty-two enjoyed the First Sunday in March dinner in Arcadia Christian Church following the morning worship service led by Charles Cable with Stuart Semple assisting Willa Cable in leading the singing. Cable sang a solo before the sermon entitled "Walking The Jesus Road." He read from Matthew 7 and Romans 12...
Vacant apartment -- tenants wanted (03/06/10)
We often talk about things that come out of the blue as something that we didn't expect. In my case I came home to find a beautiful martin house on the deck with a short note from a friend explaining he made the martin house in his workshop and he wanted to give it to me. It not only was a two story work of art, freshly painted, but done in the Fort Scott Tiger colors of red and white. How much better can it get...
Before I forget... (03/06/10)
Hi neighbors. Didn't I tell you we would have nice weather again sooner or later? Let's hope there's more where this came from. One of my favorite things to collect is trivia. Few people know more about less than I do. When I hear some fact that is more or less pretty useless, I remember it...
Battlefield Dispatches No. 204: A Desperado, Terror and Murder (03/05/10)
During the Civil War, no matter how hard the Blue Belly Billy Yanks from and in Missouri tried to eradicate the Confederate guerrillas or Bushwhackers, and they tried very hard, the Union troops never really accomplished their mission. Sometimes the "Union" scouts or patrols were successful, but there always seemed to be another group of guerrillas who were on the hunt to attack enemy supply trains, couriers, small Yankee outposts and civilians who supported the Union cause. ...
The purpose of Lent (03/05/10)
The season of Lent began a few weeks ago and, like it has been most of my life, I find myself having to explain to friends and coworkers the purpose of Lent. I often get questions like, "How does not eating meat of Friday mean anything?" and "Why do you have to give something up?"...
Rejection makes for good company (03/05/10)
Rejection. If you have felt its sting -- and who hasn't -- you're in good company. Thomas Edison was called "too stupid to learn" by his teacher. Abraham Lincoln failed at two businesses and lost six elections. Walt Disney was fired from a newspaper because he "had no imagination." The first African American Academy Award Winner for Best Actor, Sidney Poitier, was told after his first audition by the casting director, "Why don't you stop wasting people's time and go out and become a dishwasher or something?" Michael Jordan, cut from his high school basketball team, went home, locked himself in his room, and cried. ...
Getting a tax refund? Buy a savings bond (03/02/10)
If you are getting a federal tax refund from the Internal Revenue Service, you can choose to use that money to purchase U.S. savings bonds. A refund may seem like extra money to spend as you wish. But, it's also a good opportunity to put some dollars away for future major purchases, unexpected expenses, or a college education. Everyone can use an "emergency" cushion for auto repairs, medical bills, or unexpected events...
Interim pastor to fill in at Arcadia (03/02/10)
Jack Corporon, former resident of Arcadia and Pittsburg, recently attended a journalism meeting at the University of Kansas. He is a trustee of the William Allen White foundation which strives to keep alive the spirit of the Sage of Emporia. White was nationally famous for his thoughtful and authoritataive editorials in The Emporia Gazette for decades. ...
More thoughts on the Class of '49, Fort Scott (03/02/10)
In this series we have two stories. The first written by Una (Hudson) Henderson and the second story written by Bertha (Isabell) McFarland Hi Marilyn, Didn't we have fun? All my years of Fort Scott High School were very memorable. I attended seven different grade schools, (that I remember) and to attend high school four years in the same place was almost unheard of for me. I liked everyone and had lots of friends, especially if they laughed a lot...
Tractors are better than underwear (02/27/10)
My 6-year old grandson from Garnett was here for Christmas and spent a lot of time playing with a toy John Deere tractor at the house. His family was getting ready to leave and he said to me, "Grandpa, if that tractor was at my house, I would play with it all the time." I replied, "Well I guess you're going to have to keep coming down here because I'm going to keep it." His 7th birthday came in the middle of February and the more I thought about it, he is the only one that plays with the tractor. ...
What day is it? (02/27/10)
Hi neighbors. Another month is coming to a close. How are you doing with those New Year's resolutions? How often have you written the "0" for the year (as in 2009) then remembered it is 2010 and had to stop yourself and slip the "1" in before the 0?...
Battlefield Dispatches No. 203: 'Executions Justified' (02/26/10)
During the Civil War, "Congressional Inquires" occurred frequently, even as they do today and from a military perspective they could be a nuisance, but they had to be answered. This type of inquiry could come from the Federal or Confederate Congress or a state legislature. ...
It's the (thought) intent that counts (02/26/10)
"Honey, come in here. I have a surprise for you." Dave sounds excited. It is the day before Valentine's Day, so I know he's up to something. A few weeks previous, he had measured my wrist. Sort of a dead giveaway that a bracelet was coming, but I don't let on that I have figured out his secret...
I have an opinion too! (02/20/10)
Hi neighbors. Although I find the news depressing most of the time and take days off when I don't watch national political news, once in a while my Yahoo page will have a headline I can't ignore. The Supreme Court has come up with a ruling that says the government may not ban political spending by corporations in candidate elections...
Adam and Eve: The blame game begins (02/19/10)
If you're ever looking for a party idea, how about an evening of "The Blame Game"? You know how it works. Someone accuses you of doing something and then you come up with as many excuses as possible to prove you're not responsible. Party favors go to the one with the best answers...
Battlefield Dispatches No. 202: 'Robbing the mail' (02/19/10)
During the Civil War in Missouri, delivery of the U.S. "Civilian" Mail and "Military" Mail were often successfully disrupted by the Confederate Guerrillas (Partisan Rangers and Bushwhackers). This was accomplished by stopping and stealing the mail from commercial carrier vehicles such as stage coaches or military couriers. ...
Participation in the 2010 census, beginning April 1, encouraged (02/18/10)
In 1790 the first US Census took place as a means to determine where people lived, the number of seats each state would have in the US House of Representatives, and as a way to track the patterns of settlement. Established in 1902, the Census Bureau now conducts more than 200 annual surveys in addition to administering the population and housing census. A national census is required every 10 years by the US Constitution and this is the year...
Columnist looks back on past year in area agriculture (02/18/10)
My mom used to watch a midday program on television that started with the expression "like sands through the hourglass, . . ." and most readers will be able to complete this phrase. That is one of those "kind of strange" things that have stuck in my mind since childhood...
Another letter in the series on the Class of '49, Fort Scott (02/17/10)
This is the third story in a series. It is a letter written by Gloria (Stanley) Dalton Hi Marilyn, When I first thought about writing this, I was going to write about school years, but everyone else has written about childhood years, so guess I will too. ...
Arcadia Christian Church pastor David Petterson resigns (02/16/10)
Mae Watt had a busy but happy day on Saturday, Feb. 6, when Allen and Linda Watt, Wichita, with two daughters and husbands, namely, Stephanie and Andy Schwilling and one-year old Gabriella from Winfield, Kan., and Michelle and Jarric Presnell from Valley Center, Kan., spent the day in Arcadia. ...
Waiting on changes (02/13/10)
Hi neighbors. Do you spend a lot of time waiting? I hear about people waiting for all sorts of things all the time. We are all waiting for spring. At least we are waiting for the sun to shine, waiting for the temperatures to heat up, waiting for the snow to melt (or at least stop falling) waiting, waiting, waiting...
People first -- quitting time second (02/13/10)
The trip began innocently enough. Taking our first long distance outing in a used Winnebago, my wife was concerned that we have it completely checked before heading west to Colorado. The first evening we made Great Bend without incident, and visited some friends. ...
'To love others as Jesus loves us' (02/12/10)
Socrates once said, "The greatest way to live with honor in this world is to be what we pretend to be." Wouldn't it be wonderful if we were as nice and loving every day as we try to be on Valentine's Day? If we couldn't wait to make someone else smile, if hearts were shared and not broken, and if it were all about the OTHER person instead of about us?...
Battlefield Dispatches: 'Robbing and Plundering' (02/12/10)
During the Civil War, "Robbing & Plundering" were common place and were committed by soldiers in both Blue and Gray, Guerrillas, Redlegs, Jayhawkers, Bushwhackers, Civilian Vigilantes and Outlaws in Kansas and Missouri. This of course complicated and frustrated the Union peace keeping forces in the Jayhawker state of Kansas and the Bushwhacker state of Missouri. ...
