Fort's New Exhibit Officially Open

After much trouble getting the scissors to cut the ribbon, the staff at Fort Scott National Historic Site laugh. The ribbon cutting followed the Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce weekly coffee at the fort. The event celebrated the opening of a new exhibit entitled "The Fight Over Freedom." Pictured from left, front is Reta Baker, chamber board president; Kelley Collins, former fort ranger who worked on the exhibit project; Betty Boyko, superintendent of the fort; Bill Fischer, historian at the fort; Holly Baker, new chief of interpretation at the fort; Dave Martin, Fort Scott City Manager; and Lindsay Madison, executive director of the chamber.

Kelley Collins and Bill Fischer were given recognition for their role in developing the newest exhibit at Fort Scott National Historic Site, entitled "The Fight Over Freedom."
Collins is a former chief ranger and Fischer is a historian at the site.

Reta Baker, right, leads announcements at the Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce weekly coffee Thursday. The coffees are hosted by local organizations and businesses as a way to showcase events, products, and people. This week it was hosted by the Fort Scott National Historic Site to present its' new exhibit entitled "The Fight Over Freedom."

Former Fort Scott National Historic Site Chief Ranger Kelley Collins listens to a slaves perspective of Kansas is 1855, which is part of the new exhibit at the site. Colllins helped develop the exhibit entitled "The Fight Over Freedom" before retiring in December 2014. She said she did not get to see the finished exhibit and was interested in listening to it.
