Bald Eagles

Posted Friday, July 20, 2007, at 12:04 PM

Quite a few of you readers out there know that I have an absolute obsession with bald eagles. Some might call me fanatical. Others would call me a weirdo. I'm no bird watcher but I do love me some eagle watching.

I don't even know how it began really. Late last year a friend, USD 235 Superintendent Randy Rockhold, asked me to photograph an eagle so that the school could hang it in the commons area to honor past and present staff members of the school district. The district's mascot is the eagle for those of you who don't know. It's also my alma mater. I was honored to be asked. But I had no idea where to begin other than to follow the advice of a few locals who saw the majestic birds on occasion. They aren't found in the area too often so I couldn't really just drive around and photograph them on every fence post like a hawk.

After quite a bit of online research I finally began learning a few things, most importantly that I would probably have to travel to Alaska to find one. So I kept my camera in my vehicle at all times just in case. And then forgot about it for a few months until one day my boss called me at 7:30 a.m. to tell me there were two perched in a tree on the Bourbon/Crawford County line on U.S. 69 Highway. Didn't even brush my teeth...just jumped in the car and sped off. And so then I captured what would become my most well-known eagle photograph and it's become a best seller for me. West Bourbon Elementary now has a 3.5 x 6 feet photo (the first photo above) hanging in the commons area. Uniontown High School will hang a 30x40 of the second photograph pictured above next week. And yes that's bragging!

There was such a great response that I sold that same print in smaller sizes and limited it to 15 prints. There is currently one print left. And I just released the second limited edition print and have had a pretty good response on that. You can see both prints at the top of the page! I'm amassing quite a collection of bald eagle photos from the Southeast Kansas area and will hopefully be able to do a show on that later in the year. I even have a pretty sweet shot of an eagle flying through Fort Scott's Gunn Park and one of an eagle flying over the Marmaton River in Fort Scott.

For anyone interested in one of those prints or to view other eagle photos, you can email me at baldeaglephotos@gmail.com
