I've been thinking...

Posted Thursday, June 7, 2007, at 2:25 PM

I've been thinking recently about where I want to send my kids to school once they are old enough. Of course I guess I first must have children! My wife would tell you that it's going to be soon ... my response is somewhat different. It's not that I don't want kids ... just not this year. Maybe next.

Anyway, I'm having a tough time deciding which school system is better.

I grew up in the Uniontown district, which has some amazing instructors. One of them is in the teacher's hall of fame. Several others played huge roles in my life. The problem, though, is that most of them will be retired by the time my kids reach school age.

Fort Scott has wonderful schools and great athletic departments. There is a fantabulous principal in Billie Joe Drake at Eugene Ware. From what I hear, Eugene Ware is the pinnacle of schools in this area. And that makes things tougher for me.

Uniontown is a small town. Fort Scott is a big town. I want my kids to have the opportunity to be able to walk down the street without much worry they'll be abducted or hit by a car. That's small town life. But ... I want opportunity to excel in art, music and sports. Fort Scott provides a better chance for that.

I have allegiances in Uniontown because of family and friends that I've known my entire life. I've got them in Fort Scott now since I've worked around a lot of high schoolers and their parents the past few years. I used to have a one-sided view on where my kids would end up and that was Uniontown. Now I'm not so sure.

Uniontown offers a great administration. Top notch. But there are issues within the system that cause a few burps here and there. I know the administration is great at Fort Scott but know nothing about the teachers for the most part. That's where I need help.

In short, I'm torn. I need your help. It's not urgent obviously. But I would still like a little feedback from everyone on why each system is better, or worse.

Ok, Felt, it really looks like you have a dilemma here. But might I say that in order to have children, you must first grow up and stop acting like a kid, am I right? Anyway, I thought I would try to help with your problem, but I may be of no help at all. I know nothing about attending schools in U-town, however, in covering USD 235 for our newspaper, I have found most teachers and administrators there to be very friendly, accommodating, and good to work with. And there is obviously lots of proof that students get good educations there from quality teachers. Now I am slightly biased, since I have lived in Fort Scott most of my life, grew up here and attended Winfield Scott during my early years. My son now goes to school there, walking the very same hallways and sitting in the very same classrooms that I did as a child, so that does have a special meaning for me. And that may have a special feeling for you someday too. And I know he loves school and looks forward to heading to school each day. They have good quality and caring teachers and staff there. Now I have nothing whatsoever against Eugene Ware, I had many friends attend school there, and I have also found many of their teachers and staff to be easy to work with. But you have to go with your heart, and what you think is best for your child, Kenny. Allow your child to pursue the best opportunities available, watch them grow and let them choose what interests them the most. Ultimately, the decision you make for your children (someday in the future) will surely be the correct one, because I know you will keep the best interests of your children in mind.

Im afraid I cant be much help either. My girls go to Eugene Ware. My grandfather and my mother went there. I didnt live in Fort Scott as a youngster otherwise I would have gone there too. Mrs Drake is the cream of the crop when it comes to principals. She was also my 7th grade typing teacher. This is just my opinion though. I agree with the above post. You just have to go with your heart and everything will fall into place.
