New faces to lead rebuilding KC Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs did a great job at Saturday's NFL draft, selecting three players in the first two rounds. I believe each player will likely start the first game of the season.
The first pick was somewhat of a surprise. The Chiefs selected Glenn Dorsey, a defensive lineman from Louisiana State University. It was shock because many NFL insiders and probably the Chiefs, didn't think he would be available when they picked at No. 5. Draft experts had him going the St. Louis Rams at No. 2 or the Atlanta Falcons at No.3. Dorsey will instantly make the Chiefs interior line better. They got pushed around on the inside by bigger teams who just ran the ball straight up the middle. I don't think that will happen with Dorsey because he plugs the gaps up the middle and can rush the passer and stop the run. Some coaches have said publicly that Dorsey is the next Warren Sapp, a future hall of fame defensive lineman who retired last year. Let's hope the Chiefs finally got a dominant defensive lineman. They've been trying since 2002, when they drafted Ryan Sims with their first round pick. Sims was awful and couldn't play in the NFL. It was a complete disaster the Chiefs are still paying for. With their second pick, also in the first round(No. 15 overall), the Chiefs drafted OG Branden Albert, of Virginia. This guys a monster of a man weighting over 300 pounds. He's got great feet and very athletic. In fact, he didn't start playing football until his junior year in high school. He was originally a basketball player. Albert will likely start at left or right tackle, which will be out of position for him. But he will instantly be an impact player on an offensive line that was a disaster last year. Albert is better as a run blocker rather than a pass protector but he does both very well. In the second round, the Chiefs selected cornerback Branden Flowers of Virginia Tech. Flowers was one of the slower cornerbacks in the draft. He ran a 4.55 second 40-yard dash. If that number would've been 10 seconds faster, Flowers would've been a top 10 pick. Speed is a big factor on draft day. However, Flowers is the most physical corners in the draft. He gets to the line of scrimmage and makes tackles and doesn't shy away from hard hits. Like Albert and Dorsey, Flowers will probably start from day 1. The Chiefs have a big need for fresh legs at the corner position. I think they need to get rid of Pat Surtain and draft another cornerback in the later rounds that will take place on Sunday. In all, I give the Chiefs an A grade. They got three quality players that will fill huge holes on their talent-starved team. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |
