Change is needed for Chiefs to win

ESPN's "Monday Night Football" commentators Tony Kornheiser and Ron Jaworski got into a heated debate during Thursday's boring Chiefs-Dolphins preseason game. Jaworski said Kornheiser thinks like fans when teams don't win: "fire coaches and staff to remedy the situation." Jaws said that doesn't work. It takes patience with coaches and players to see results.

I'm sorry, but I agree with Korheiser.

I think Chiefs fans should demand Chiefs general manager/president/CEO Carl Peterson resign. Fans can accomplish this by not going to games and contacting their area government representative.( Just kidding about contacting your representative.)

But Chiefs fans can send a message to newly crowned Owner Clark Hunt by stop going to games.

For too long, Chiefs fans have endured average success under Peterson. Year after year, fans are teased with the notion that this year will finally be the year the team goes to the Super Bowl. And each year, it's the same result: average or above average team that either doesn't make the playoffs or tanks in the first or second round of the playoffs.

It's a shame that the late Lamar Hunt never got an opportunity to hold up the AFC title trophy that bears his name.

Peterson has been in power since 1989, when he took over for Jim Schaaf. That's 17 years he's had to get it done.

I'll give Carl some credit. He's built some quality teams during those years, along with a tremendous fan base. Chiefs home games, for years, have been sold out. Carl has made millions of dollars for the Chiefs via die hard fans.

Peterson and his scouts have failed to develop star players other than Tony G., Will Shields, Derrick Thomas and Larry Johnson. Heck, if I had 17 years worth of drafts, I could pick a handful of superstars too. You're bound to if you've got that many shots at it.

All the other talents have been free agent pick ups who usually are or were past their prime.(i.e. Ty Law, Pat Surtain, Marcus Allen, Joe Montana, and just recently Donnie Edwards) Carl loves to get players like this because they're cheap and could provide a few good years. It also instills excitement with fans.

For instance, the scouting department under Peterson have screwed up when selecting defensive tackles. They chose Ryan Sims and Junior Siavii the last few years, with Sims selected in the first round, Siavii in the second. The two busts are not even on the current team because of their lack of productivity.

Peterson has hired four head coaches during his tenure. Fans and the media have speculated that the coach was the reason the Chiefs didn't advance in the playoffs. Not so. Peterson and his scouts mostly determine the players on the field. Players win championships. Good players.

Now we head into the 2007 season. Judging by the first two preseason games, it seems like the Chiefs are in "rebuild mode" without even the slightest chance of making the playoffs.

I think fans should hold owners accountable for their performance and shortcomings. Sometimes change is needed for success.

In this case, Clark Hunt needs to set up and get rid of Peterson so the Chiefs have a better opportunity to win a championship.
