New faces to lead rebuilding KC Chiefs
Posted Saturday, April 26, at 6:38 PM
The Kansas City Chiefs did a great job at Saturday's NFL draft, selecting three players in the first two rounds. I believe each player will likely start the first game of the season.

The first pick was somewhat of a surprise. The Chiefs selected Glenn Dorsey, a defensive lineman from Louisiana State University. It was shock because many NFL insiders and probably the Chiefs, didn't think he would be available when they picked at No. 5. Draft experts had him going the St. Louis Rams at No. 2 or the Atlanta Falcons at No.3.

Dorsey will instantly make the Chiefs interior line better. They got pushed around on the inside by bigger teams who just ran the ball straight up the middle. I don't think that will happen with Dorsey because he plugs the gaps up the middle and can rush the passer and stop the run.

Some coaches have said publicly that Dorsey is the next Warren Sapp, a future hall of fame defensive lineman who retired last year.

Let's hope the Chiefs finally got a dominant defensive lineman. They've been trying since 2002, when they drafted Ryan Sims with their first round pick. Sims was awful and couldn't play in the NFL. It was a complete disaster the Chiefs are still paying for.

With their second pick, also in the first round(No. 15 overall), the Chiefs drafted OG Branden Albert, of Virginia. This guys a monster of a man weighting over 300 pounds. He's got great feet and very athletic. In fact, he didn't start playing football until his junior year in high school. He was originally a basketball player.

Albert will likely start at left or right tackle, which will be out of position for him. But he will instantly be an impact player on an offensive line that was a disaster last year.

Albert is better as a run blocker rather than a pass protector but he does both very well.

In the second round, the Chiefs selected cornerback Branden Flowers of Virginia Tech.

Flowers was one of the slower cornerbacks in the draft. He ran a 4.55 second 40-yard dash. If that number would've been 10 seconds faster, Flowers would've been a top 10 pick. Speed is a big factor on draft day.

However, Flowers is the most physical corners in the draft. He gets to the line of scrimmage and makes tackles and doesn't shy away from hard hits.

Like Albert and Dorsey, Flowers will probably start from day 1. The Chiefs have a big need for fresh legs at the corner position. I think they need to get rid of Pat Surtain and draft another cornerback in the later rounds that will take place on Sunday.

In all, I give the Chiefs an A grade. They got three quality players that will fill huge holes on their talent-starved team.

Plastic lettuce?
Posted Thursday, January 10, at 1:02 PM

Two of my colleagues and myself went to Wendy's restaurant for lunch Wednesday. I got two crispy chicken sandwiches, a baked potato and a side salad. I was about half-way through the salad when it happened. I took a bite of the lettuce and felt a sharp pain. I immediately spit the food out onto a napkin. Something's not right, I thought. There's no way lettuce is that crispy and sharp...

The Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins share similarities, except for one important trait. Both teams are horrendous. They're the two worst teams in the NFL. If the league ranked teams like college football, Kansas City is 31th and Miami is 32nd.(There are 32 teams in the NFL.)...

Firefighters rescue me-- sort of.

I gripped a small tree, trying to hold onto anything to keep my balance. I slowly took baby steps down the steep embankment. Mud clung to my shoes. I needed boots instead of tennis shoes. Didn't know I'd be doing something like this when I woke up that day...

Change is needed for Chiefs to win
Posted Saturday, August 18, at 12:46 PM

ESPN's "Monday Night Football" commentators Tony Kornheiser and Ron Jaworski got into a heated debate during Thursday's boring Chiefs-Dolphins preseason game. Jaworski said Kornheiser thinks like fans when teams don't win: "fire coaches and staff to remedy the situation." Jaws said that doesn't work. It takes patience with coaches and players to see results...

My Experience With Local Law Enforcement

I had the pleasure this weekend to go on two ride-alongs with area law enforcement officers. On Friday, I rode along with Bronson Police Chief Gene Parker. Sunday, I tagged along with Bourbon County Undersheriff Ron Gray. Both experiences were pleasant and informative...

Heed the sirens

I was at the police station on Tuesday and was talking to Public Safety Director Jeff Davis. He asked if I had been aware of the Greensburg tornado and the fact that the tornado sirens in town blared for 15-20 minutes before the twister struck. I said I heard that...

Wal-Mart: A Necessity, Sometimes
Posted Wednesday, April 25, at 11:07 AM

Here's my experience at the new Wal-Mart Supercenter: I went directly to the fabrics department. I needed nylon netting. There was no one at the counter, so I decided to get groceries. About 15 minutes later, I returned to the department. Again, no one was there. I didn't think this was odd, since it was around 9:30 p.m. Sunday...

We should commend the true heroes

The Virginia Tech Massacre. It was,in my opinion, one of the most disgusting acts of violence in America. One positive I think that came from the shooting was the quick response by first-responders. Virginia Tech Police, Virginia State Police, Federal authorities, Blacksburg Police, fire and emergency medical technicians...

Is Violence Just Part of Our Society?
Posted Friday, April 13, at 2:15 PM

Unbelievable. Crime is on the rise. All you have to do is tune into the Kansas City television news channels on any given night and you'll see for yourself. Drive-bys. Car jackings. Home invasions. Robberies. Homocides. True, televison news focuses on crime more so than other news outlets. But this stuff is going on at an ever increasing rate...
