Good Samaritans

In this day and age, you don't find a lot of Good Samaritans. People just don't care anymore or they don't feel comfortable with it. I remember back when I was younger, I was taught that if you were taking out the garbage, go knock on your elderly neighbor's door to see if he or she had garbage to take out as well. What happened to those young folks who would help people across the street? Or carry in groceries? I'm guilty of this as well. I think some of it is fear. You just don't really trust anyone anymore. You don't know if your neighbor is hiding bodies in the basement. You don't know if the guy running to help with your groceries is a madman!
There are a few guys (daddy's I would assume) in the drop off area of Eugene Ware every morning. Each morning, it doesn't matter what kind of weather we're having, they (usually two at a time) are out there making sure the kids get out of their cars safely, into the building safely and on the way in, each student gets a high five and a welcome to school. My daughter, who is in the 4th grade, looks forward to that every morning. These guys aren't even really doing anything; just making the kids feel more comfortable and putting smiles on their faces. I admit that I smile when I see them as well. It's nice knowing that these kids are shown on a daily basis that just because mom and dad aren't there doesn't mean that they are on their own to get in the building to face another dreadful day at the blackboard. These guys are there every single morning to say "good morning", "how are you", or "have a great day", and I really hope that when these kids are older, they will think back on these men who started their days off with smiles and do the same for other children. These guys are Good Samaritans.
If you know any of these men who do this for our children every morning, give them a pat on the back, or a hug and tell them thank you for brightening the lives of our children everyday. |
