I understand that the nature of circumstances in our lives and within the community can create hurt, angry and even hostile emotions and reactions in people. Thus is human nature. And we are usually apt to express it.

The Fort Scott Tribune Online is a complimentary extension of The Fort Scott Tribune print edition. One great thing about The Fort Scott Tribune Online is that readers can interact and give instant feedback to coverage. Readers can carry on a living dialogue with the reporter and other readers.

The Fort Scott Tribune values the opinions and feedback of its readers and encourages participation.

However, I feel that I need to remind readers that when responding to a story or blog, the comment is expected to be about the content of the story or the blog. Comments that contain profanity or other content that is deemed inappropriate, harmful or offensive will be removed from the site. The commenting aspect is meant to progress the significance of the issue at hand. Name calling, fights, private matters and the like simply do progress the issue. Repeat offenders may be blocked from the site.

The ability to keep the integrity and professionalism of the site is not only in the hands of The Fort Scott Tribune staff, but also the readers.

When readers click to view a story, there is a notice posted that reads, "The nature of the Internet makes it impractical for our staff to review every comment. If you feel that a comment is offensive, please Login or Create an account first, and then you will be able to flag a comment as objectionable."

The Fort Scott Tribune is allowing the community to "police" its own site. The Fort Scott Tribune values readers' opinions and concerns and wants to make the site a place for all readers to interact.

Please use common sense when you are posting. The simple rule The Fort Scott Tribune staff uses is that if we wouldn't publish it in the newspaper, we won't publish it on our site.

"Please use common sense."

Too bad it's not too common.

I like that you can post your thoughts about the stories that are here online. I hope that everyone reads this and understands that it is a benfit of having the paper online.

Thanks for letting everyone be able to do this.

Tabatha Goodwin's response:
Thank you for understanding! It's our pleasure. We love this new format for the Web site. It's all about making it a community-oriented site. We want the public to be able to sound their voices on events and issues.
