Constructive Blogging!

This is just a reminder to our bloggers and our readers who post comments. Blogs are intended as an editorial venue for our bloggers to voice their opinions on events and life. The readers are encouraged to respond to the bloggers, and then continue a dialog with the bloggers. We welcome various opinions - that's why we have the ability for readers to respond! We want to know what you think! We want you to voice your opinion!

However, we will not tolerate personal attacks or foul language of any kind in readers' responses or blogs. It's simply immature and unprofessional. The same goes with responses to stories. If either appears in a response, the entry will be removed in its entirety and the ability for that reader to post comments may be deactivated. We are hosting a professional newsworthy site for our community.

As a newspaper we are all about free speech. So please, exercise your right to free speech on the topics the bloggers are discussing and in your opinion about our stories. And remember, this is a community site, so what you post will be read by everyone. If you have another topic that you feel strongly about and no one is blogging yet or has written a story yet, I suggest writing a letter to the editor.

I just have one question.

Does the axe you will use to censor personal attacks and insults swing both ways?

By the way, I have responded to several blogs but I'm not getting any feedback from the original bloggers.

Maybe you scared everybody away?

Tabatha Beerbower's response:
Actually, the personal attack that I am referring to happened on the Nevada Daily Mail site.

It was a person attacking a blogger about a personal event that happened in that blogger's life that the responder knew about. The comment had nothing to do with the blogger's position at the newspaper nor what that blogger covered. The comment had nothing to do with anything he had written nor any stance he had taken on a current event. The person was attacking the blogger as a person with information about his personal life and by doing so, the responder abused the integrity of the medium to voice his/her personal feelings at the blogger.

In that sense, the comment was inappropriate and unconstructive and had nothing to do with the newspaper or its content, so it was removed. It clearly crossed the line between professional and personal. We are not allowed to edit comments, only remove those that we or the public deem inappropriate. The same standard is applied to our bloggers.

Bloggers and readers are welcomed and encouraged to voice their opinions. That is what the blogs are used for. They are online editorials. That is also why readers are encouraged to post comments to stories and to write letters to the editors.

As for bloggers not responding, most of our bloggers are also staff members who blog and respond as they have time and they see fit. I continue to encourage everyone that blogs to continue dialogs with responders, as I feel this is an important part of the process.
