Resolve to meet goals

Posted Monday, January 4, 2010, at 5:32 PM

I am not the type to make New Year's Resolutions, but this year I have made one ... achieve my goals.

A goal is something that can be worked toward, whereas a resolution is more of just a statement. This is kind of a backward way of looking at it ... most people make a resolution and stick with if for a few weeks then forget about it.

In 2010, I have set the following goals:

* Increase the amount of photography in my life

* Lose 50 pounds

* Clean the house and do the dishes more often

* Finish the projects I start

These are realistic goals I would think that, with a little effort and some focused energy, can be achieved.

I came up with these goals because these are things that will make my life more enjoyable. I love photography and I want to make sure that I never lose it. I want to get better as a photographer and the only way to do that is by practice, practice, and more practice.

I am a heavy guy, to put it nicely. When I become a father I want to be able to play with my children without getting winded. I want to be able to play catch with my kids and take them to baseball games. I want to be in better shape for my future. Losing 50 pounds, about one pound per week, would make a great step in the right direction. By getting in control of my eating habits and working out more, both in the gym and with my Wii Fit, I should have no trouble creating a healthier tomorrow.

For most of my late teen-age to early-adult life, I have been one to do laundry frequently, however I don't like doing the dishes. I think my wife would appreciate it if I were to wash the dishes a little more often and maybe did a little dusting here and there.

Like most guys, I have a bad habit of starting a bunch of projects and only completing a handful of them. This year I have set the goal of staying on top of projects and seeing then through to completion.

Sure, I could say that I resolve to lose weight, but I have actually put a number on it, and set it as a goal. By putting a specific number to it I feel there is just a little bit more importance to it. If I don't achieve that goal, then others will also go unachieved.

So here's to those who have set goals for the year! May you be successful and may you help some one along the way!

I'm 25 years-old and I love photography, writing, and just being creative. I am an avid sports fan, with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, New York Mets, Kansas City Chiefs, and Pittsburg State Gorillas on my favorites list. I really couldn't care less about basketball. Football and baseball keep me occupied. Oh yeah, I HATE the Yankees.
